Bernheim Forest Giants, Clermont, KY

2021-11-20 - Clermont, KY - Photo By Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "A small group of us visited Bernheim Forest in November, 2021. This Forest is a beautiful place to see Fall colors and Giants... well wooden giants anyway. We saw three of the giants on the grounds, and this one was one of my favorites. Bernheim Forest is about 15 miles from Bardstown, nestled between Deatsville and Clermont, Kentucky. With lots of trails, landscaped grounds and small lakes it is a very family-friendly destination, well worth exploring."

Walk About: Chapter One

Darlene Franklin-Campbell's new novel, Walk About, is being posted online chapter-by-chapter, for people to read for free. "It's quirky. It's wild. It's four sisters turned fugitive. It's a walk-about."

Chapter One:

By Darlene Franklin-Campbell

ROSIE PACED. Her late husband's body was in the kitchen, lying under a mountain of fabric.

"Get a tarp," she thought, but Rosie didn't have a tarp. Maybe James Allen Putt had a tarp out in the garage, but she couldn't risk the neighbors seeing her drag one in.

She thought fast and set her sewing machine on the kitchen table then unwound yard after yard of fabric to make it look like she had been indecisive and just threw it in the floor, which was how she sewed anyway.

James had screamed at her for making a mess like this once, the second time she did it, he had bloodied her nose and blacked her eye. Now he was a corpse under the mess that he hated so much .

She glanced at the clock, 8 p.m. James had been dead since four o'clock. Where were her sisters? She had paced. She had screamed. She had cried. Then she had started all over again.

Budd speaks of life, death and PTSD at CU chapel

By Daisy Rodriguez

Campbellsville, KY - Dr. Joseph Budd, associate professor of criminal justice at Campbellsville University, remembers the night he arrived at King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia during his time serving in the first Gulf War.

The airport, still under construction, was serving as a U.S. airbase, and Budd was stationed there.

As he was walking around, he got lost. Then suddenly, the air raid sirens went off.

"As the air sirens were going off, I still didn't register what was going on," Budd said during the Veterans Day chapel Nov. 10. "I was severely jetlagged, but I soon caught on, as I saw everyone diving for the nearest bunker."

Signing ceremony for CMC inclusion as part of TJCMF

The T.J. Community Mission Foundation (TJCMF) and Community Medical Care (CMC) are excited to announce the two organizations are joining forces through the inclusion of CMC as a program of the TJCMF. On Thursday, November 18, leadership of both organizations and the community gathered to honor the move through a joint resolution signing ceremony.

Following the approval of the board of directors of both organizations, CMC will become "Community Medical Care: A Program of the T.J. Community Mission Foundation". And, although CMC as a separate 501c3 non-profit will dissolve on Jan. 1, 2022, its mission of assisting low-income seniors and working, uninsured and underinsured adults with their every-changing medical needs will continue.

In 2020, Dr. Bharat Mody, one of the founders of CMC, began a conversation with Neil Thornbury, CEO of T.J. Regional Health, to introduce the idea of CMC merging with TJCMF in some fashion. Dr. Mody recognized the opportunity to combine the work of CMC and TJCMF in efforts to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the important program moving forward. This step is a natural progression of the work that has been done by CMC from the onset of the program.

KTC: Buckle up, put the phone down for Thanksgiving travel

By Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY - With the holidays quickly approaching, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's (KYTC) Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is sending Thanksgiving travelers important lifesaving reminders - buckle up and put the phone down.

"The upcoming holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year, so we're asking Kentuckians to extend their commitment to safety and health onto our roadways," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "We believe that if all drivers practice these two simple behaviors - buckle up, and put the phone down - lives will be saved."

According to KOHS, each year in Kentucky, distracted driving results in more than 50,000 crashes, more than 15,000 injuries and approximately 200 deaths. So, put down the phone and refrain from distracted driving behaviors such as texting, emailing and phone chats.

KSP Honor Guard celebrates 40 years of service

By Captain Paul Blanton

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky State Police (KSP) celebrated and paid tribute to the agency's Honor Guard unit for 40 years of dedicated service to the commonwealth. The Governor proclaimed November 11 as Kentucky State Police Honor Guard Day to mark their 40th anniversary. A copy of the proclamation can be found here: 2021-PROC-277463 (PDF).

"The KSP Honor Guard has provided a professional presence during ceremonies, including those to memorialize Kentuckians lost to COVID-19," said Gov. Beshear. "I am thankful to this elite unit for their service and steadfast dedication to honoring the lives of officers and citizens alike."

The Honor Guard represents KSP at civic events, parades, public and agency ceremonies. This specialized unit performs the "Presentation of Colors" at various events and provides honors for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. One of their most important duties is to provide funeral honors for retired troopers. During a retiree's funeral visitation, they serve as a casket guard standing at the head of the coffin as a sign of respect. Additionally, during the graveside service, they present a folded Commonwealth of Kentucky and KSP flag to the family in honor of their loved one's dedication and service to the state, and conclude with a final salute over the coffin.

Commentary: Give thanks this holiday season

By Senator Max Wise

The holiday spirit is in the air, and like you, I am excited for the special days ahead. Despite the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we in the Kentucky General Assembly are doing our best to continue legislative business in Frankfort to prepare for the upcoming 2022 Regular Session.

Thankfully, except for several necessary special elections, the weeks leading up to this holiday season have not been dominated by the campaign season. In light of the challenging nearly two years behind us, it is refreshing to focus on what this time of year is about -- family, friends, and our communities. Each Thanksgiving, I look forward to being home in my district, hearing from constituents, and spending time with loved ones. Join me this year in embracing valuable time with loved ones.

In the spirit of the season of giving, let's also remember those in need as we prepare our Thanksgiving meals. I encourage you and your families to consider reaching out to a community food bank, church, or local charity to help ensure that the homeless are sheltered, and the hungry are fed, especially during these colder fall and winter months. We have so much to be thankful for this holiday season, and volunteering time and resources can make an incredible difference in our less fortunate neighbors' lives.
