Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Kentucky

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, October 18, 2021, Gov. Andy Beshear joined advocates at the state Capitol to proclaim Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Kentucky, and he urged Kentuckians to speak out and take a stand against the crime.

The Governor said it is unacceptable that in Kentucky more than 45% of women and 35% of men experience intimate partner physical violence or rape in their lifetimes.

"We must all lend our voices to speak out against domestic violence and work to stop it - now," Gov. Beshear said. "Combating violent crime, seeking justice for victims and supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault is a core mission for my administration, and I am asking Kentuckians to help us be a leader by showing the nation that we do not tolerate domestic violence in Kentucky."

LWC to host Drive-Thru Safe Halloween

By Venus Popplewell

Area children and their family members are invited to Lindsey Wilson College for its first-ever "Drive-Thru Safe Halloween." The COVID-19 friendly trick-or-treat event will be held in lieu of the traditional campus Halloween event that has taken place inside the LWC residence halls for more than 25 years.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be from 5pmCT to 8pmCT on Friday, October 29, 2021. Cars will enter campus on Spickard Drive, off of Highway 206.

"The Lindsey Wilson community enjoys welcoming local children to campus each year and we were so disappointed when we had to cancel "Safe Halloween" last year because of the coronavirus pandemic," said Anna Buckman who was named LWC Director of Student Activities last fall. "We really wanted to find a way to continue the event. A drive-thru, trick-or-treat seems to be the safest and most responsible option for our students and our guests."

COVID-19 cases, positivity rate declining as more are vaccinated

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - Following meetings of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee, Gov. Andy Beshear and Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH), provided updates today on booster shots for the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the Moderna vaccine series and the Pfizer vaccine series for children ages 5 to 11.

Gov. Beshear also said Kentucky's COVID-19 data is trending in the right direction as Kentuckians continue to get vaccinated.

"In today's report, what we see is just about everything is moving in the right direction and actually at a speed - the decrease in cases and in hospitalizations, ventilator use and ICUs - that is significant," said Gov. Beshear. "It is a real trend, a positive trend. It has not plateaued. It is moving downward, which is reason for optimism. But our deaths, which trail cases and hospitalizations, ICUs and ventilators, remain too high."
