Scout sign project completed: a letter of thanks

To Mayor Hoots and Columbia City Council,

Thank you for your support throughout my Eagle Scout project. I cannot attend the City Council meeting Monday night because of a prior commitment, but I wanted to share some details with you about it.

I really learned a lot about leadership, and I am grateful that you gave me the opportunity to work on the sign.

My whole troop came and volunteered. They did a wonderful job helping to put up the sign.

Letter: Also trapped by pickup line

Brad Byington writes:
We also were trapped by a pickup line. But it was almost on the Square across the street from the Annex building. Most of the time in Kentucky people are very gracious about allowing you to pull out. But not for the pick up people. I had my turn signal on and waited and waited and waited and waited and finally just shut off the car and waited some more until the traffic finally cleared 20 minutes later.

I agree about being enablers. I would probably be considered hard-hearted because I know I'm in the minority of not coddling now second- and third-generation children. I also noticed the school buses they were also coming from the school and up to the Square were pretty much empty.

During October, KDA is partnering with the Kentucky Department of Education's Division of School and Community Nutrition to get more Kentucky fresh food products into school cafeterias. Together the two agencies are sponsoring the "Kentucky Crunch" encouraging students, faculty/staff, families, local producers and community members to procure local varieties of their favorite fruits and vegetables, exhibiting the strength and positive impacts of Kentucky's Farm to School program initiatives on students.

Fall Forest Fire Hazard Season in Kentucky

By John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - With wildfires raging in the western United States, Kentuckians are reminded that as the state enters its Fall Forest Fire Hazard Season on October 1, their actions can make a big difference in the number and severity of fires in the commonwealth.

Wildfires are more than 99% human-caused in Kentucky. People deliberately setting forests on fire is the number one cause, followed by the burning of fields or debris, according to Brandon Howard, Director of the Division of Forestry. Other causes are sparks from faulty equipment, downed electrical lines, children playing with fire, and escaped campfires.

"The safety of our communities and the protection of our state's vast forest resources is our top priority," Howard said. "But for our state to keep fires to a minimum this fall season, every Kentuckian has to be intentional and responsible."

In an effort to reduce accidental fires, burning restrictions are in place during fall fire season when fallen leaves can quickly spread flames. Beginning Oct. 1 through Dec. 15, it is illegal under state law to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland between the daylight hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Delaying burning until late in the evening when humidity levels are typically higher and winds are generally lower makes it harder for fires to escape.

Phillip Coffey - All Missed

ALL MISSED - By Phillip Coffey
'Always have to take what you get'- chewing on his big chaw
Of 'Baccer',"Mammoth Cave" - a real long limestone hole nearby
In South Central Kentucky - cold Green River flowing through it.
Lot of sinkholes in every other direction -he knows all of this.

Never been very far, not ever entering any public National Park
But took oft to serve his country, proud -handed him boxer shorts.
Pretty dress uniform, he never wore- put on the fatigues given.
Fit him quite well, made sure his rifle was clean - incoming bullets - all missed.
