JOY Ministries Mission Week

By Hannah Peck

JOY Ministries has been hard at work this summer ministering to students of all ages through Camp HOPE and JOY's tenth year of Mission Week. Students learned about the love of Christ, serving others, and enjoyed fellowship and field trips. 20 campers took part in Camp HOPE, while 60 students joined in on the fun for Mission Week. During Mission Week students served 450 meals to the community, hosted over 75 students for the JOY Back to School Bash, cleaned and prayed over Adair County High School and worked at the JOY Crisis Resource Center.

Joy Ministries would like to thank Kosair Charities for their support. The generosity of Kosair Charities made Camp HOPE possible and played an instrumental role in the success of Mission Week and JOY's Back to School Bash. Krystal Cundiff of JOY Ministries shared, "Kosair Charities plays such a integral role in our summer programming and outreach efforts. We are so grateful for the kindness they have extended to our organization over the years. They make all of this possible."

If you are interested in learning more about JOY Ministries, please contact JOY at 270-380-1808. Are you interested in supporting JOY Ministries? If so, visit our website at joy-ministries.org.

Senator Max Wise: Celebrating Labor Day

By Senator Max Wise

On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, America held its first Labor Day celebration. In 1894, then-President Grover Cleveland officially made Labor Day a national holiday. Since then, America has recognized the first Monday in September to celebrate the people who keep our economy moving and society strong - American workers.

The challenges of 2020 and 2021 have strengthened our appreciation for those who make up our workforce. Healthcare professionals and first responders remain on the frontlines, serving our communities and keeping us safe and healthy. Teachers are continuing to adapt to provide our children with the best quality of education possible. Our state and national economy-and all the laborers who keep it moving-work daily to keep shelves stocked, infrastructure up to par, and so much more.

Letter: Years ago

Marie Freeman writes:
Years ago I worked at Dr. Smith's office. And I did exactly that I went through the trash and I did find an ID. After contacting the individual I found out that she had paid someone to clean trash out of her back shed. And they had disposed of it in that dumpster.

I would think build yourself a fence around it and put a locked gate on it that would surely help and perhaps a security light. They even have dumpster fencing that you can put around it. Or put a lid on it a chain around it were you can't open the lid unless it's unlocked. It's happening at night it's not happening during the daylight. It's a shame you have to go to those measures. Good fences make good neighbors I guess. I've had to make a huge investment and I don't have the money to spare just so my dogs can be safe in their own yard!

Letter: looking for ID in trash bags

Donna Rieder writes:
In response to the dumpster issue; if they looked in the trash bags they might find something with a name or address on it... wearing gloves, of course, in case of needles or other sharp objects. - Donna

If this were Japan, that's exactly what would happen and there would be a high price to pay. Or if it were in the neighborhood dump near Alice's Restaurant, that would also happen and the perpetrators would wind up on the group W bench and later write a song about it and get rich and famous. - LW
