New Host Family Orientation held at LWC

By Sabine Eastham

On Friday August 6, 2021, the International Student Programs (ISP) at Lindsey Wilson College held their bi-annual host parent orientation for incoming hosts. Incoming hosts: Melanie Flanagan, Jen & John Davis, David Waltz, Sue & Scott Dillery networked with seasoned host parents: Misti Konsavage, Charles & Cathy Hunt, Joanne & Mike Payne, and Charles & Jeanne Marshburn. They shared their experiences, and together discovered myths, discussed expectations and fears.

Hosts will be able to meet their new students over the next few weeks, as well as in a "Meet & Greet" on September 10, 2021.

Participants spoke with fond memories of past "International Marketplaces", where students will prepare authentic cuisine from their countries and share bits about their culture and traditions. This year's event will be held outdoors, October 15, 2021, where Helen Flatt Drive meets Lindsey Wilson Street.

Thanks to wonderful individuals like these, and 25 additional families, international students get introduced to American life. Sharing local and family traditions with international students will help them understand what America is all about.

TJMF donates Stop the Bleed kits to local agencies

Through a gift from the T.J. Community Mission Foundation, two local law enforcement agencies have received life-saving equipment and hands-on training to use when responding to potentially traumatic situations where a higher level of immediate healthcare is required. Both the Columbia Police Department and the Adair County Sheriff's office received "Stop the Bleed" kits, tourniquets, and instruction for each of their officers.

The contents of the Stop the Bleed kits mirror those of the Tactical Combat Casualty Care program, and the training each officer receives will help them to become experts in the use of these pieces of equipment in critical situations.

Bill Edwards, RN is a long-time nurse leader at T.J. Health Columbia and is a certified trainer for the Stop the Bleed program. He will provide training to officers in hemorrhage control and other medical techniques that can treat injured persons until they can receive more advanced medical attention.

"It's common for healthcare organizations and law enforcement to forge relationships and assist one another in training for and managing life-threatening situations they regularly face," Edwards said. "This equipment will allow officers to control a hemorrhage on a patient and also mitigate their own injuries."

Carol Perkins: Old School Ways

Previous Column: Where are they now?

By Carol Perkins

Each year as schools open, I think about my years as a student and a teacher. Over fifty years of my life were spent attending school or teaching. All my school days were spent in Metcalfe County, and all but one year when I taught in Barren County was here, too.

Small schools offer a chance for the small population to be involved and recognized from an early age. By high school, many wanted to fly under the radar, but we teachers tried to pull out their talents. That's why if I had the power to make changes in the national educational system, I would push for small schools with small classes.

When I was growing up, Center, Sulphur Well, and Summer Shade had their own elementary schools, and many one-room schools were scattered throughout the county.
