August Chamber of Commerce meeting cancelled

Many in Adair County are not well as our COVID cases are rising daily. Because of this rise, we are cancelling the Chamber of Commerce meeting that had been scheduled for Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Stay well and we hope to see you in September!

Praise for Chief Murphy and Councilmen Flower and Harris

I wish to commend Chief of Police Jr. Murphy and city council members Robert Flowers and Mark Harris for posing together in a photo that encourages people to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Too many public office holders are remaining silent in the war against this deadly disease. They have put public health first and displayed a profile in courage.

Mike Ollery, 55, Adair County, KY (1965-2021)

Michael Lynn "Mike" Ollery, 55, of Columbia, Kentucky, died Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at TJ Health/Columbia Emergency Room.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Turner "Skeezix" Ollery. Mike was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcat fan, formerly worked for Hancock Furniture and Classic Cabinets, a member of Mt. Carmel Church and had attended Kellyville Community Church.

CAUD: Boil Water Advisory lifted Greensburg Rd. area

As of 9:15amCT on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, the Boil Water Advisory starting at 6168-8520 Greensburg Rd, Milltown Church Rd., Milltown Rd and Portland Rd and all side roads in between has been lifted by the Division of Water Columbia Office. This means your water is safe for human consumption. You no longer have to boil your water.

Author Mel Hankla to appear in Columbia

Mel Hankla, founder of American Historic Services LLC, will be appearing in Columbia on September 17, 2021.

He will be signing his book, Into The Bluegrass, from 10amCT to 2pmCT at the Trabue Russell House, an event being held in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of the historic house.

Hankla is a noted collector, researcher, lecturer, and writer of Kentucky heritage. He is an active member of the Kentucky Rifle Association, is a past president of the Contemporary Longrifle Association, and editor-in-chief of American Tradition Magazine.

He grew up in Jamestown, Kentucky and attended Western Kentucky University.

LWC Men's Track & Field 2020-21 Rewind

The Lindsey Wilson men's outdoor track & field team secured the Mid-South Conference championship in a year where they racked up eight top 10 finishes in the outdoor competitions. Due to varying concerns with the pandemic, the men's indoor track & field team only competed in one event where no team score was given.

Four Blue Raiders competed in the 2021 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with Elias Foor, Levi Owens, Jaylun Wallace and Ahumad Williams all earning a spot in the qualifiers. The men finished 69th in the national competition with Wallace finishing sixth in the 400-meter dash, earning him NAIA All-American honors.

Friday, August 6 will be a special day downtown

The 2nd annual Truck It Up will be held on Friday, August 6, 2021, in Columbia in the parking lot across from City Hall. Several food trucks will be present from throughout the area.

There will be a school supplies giveaway and the popular 'Paint the Town' sidewalk art contest. All during the week groups, organizations, churches, and residents will create chalk drawings downtown. Approximately forty places have already been reserved.

To The Nines will be held from 6pmCT until 9pmCT for late shopping at businesses on and around the square.

CPD: Wanton endangerment arrest on Edna Drive

The Columbia Police Department responded to Edna Drive on Tuesday night, August 3, 2021, after report of an altercation between a male subject and two females. Male subject was reported to have pointed a firearm at victims and prevented them from leaving the area.

Upon arrival, officers located and detained the subject. After a brief on-scene investigation, he was taken into custody.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information 8/3/2021

Hospitalizations: We presently have 27 cases in the hospital. This is 4 less than what we reported in our last report. We have had a total of 1,334 hospitalizations resulting in a 5.57% hospitalization rate (about 1 in 18) among known cases. The state hospitalization rate is 5%. The latest data shows that 86.67% of Lake Cumberland's ICU beds are filled, and 11.94% of ventilator capacity is being utilized.

Again, we encourage our citizens to take the COVID-19 vaccine, which is safe and very effective. Of our 9,885 new cases since the vaccine started becoming available, almost 97.23% were unvaccinated. Below are our area's COVID-19 vaccination uptake rates compared to the state average.
  • State - 52.00%
  • Taylor - 43.55%
  • Pulaski - 40.75%
  • Russell - 37.91%
  • Green - 33.38%
  • Adair - 30.85%
  • Wayne - 30.61%
  • Cumberland - 29.30%
  • Casey - 28.30%
  • McCreary - 25.51%
  • Clinton - 24.50%
Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 9.88%.

It's currently 56F at the Adair County Mesonet station. Today will be sunny, with a 20 percent chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms, and a high near 82F. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning.
