LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information 8/3/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Hospitalizations: We presently have 27 cases in the hospital. This is 4 less than what we reported in our last report. We have had a total of 1,334 hospitalizations resulting in a 5.57% hospitalization rate (about 1 in 18) among known cases. The state hospitalization rate is 5%. The latest data shows that 86.67% of Lake Cumberland's ICU beds are filled, and 11.94% of ventilator capacity is being utilized.

Again, we encourage our citizens to take the COVID-19 vaccine, which is safe and very effective. Of our 9,885 new cases since the vaccine started becoming available, almost 97.23% were unvaccinated. Below are our area's COVID-19 vaccination uptake rates compared to the state average.
  • State - 52.00%
  • Taylor - 43.55%
  • Pulaski - 40.75%
  • Russell - 37.91%
  • Green - 33.38%
  • Adair - 30.85%
  • Wayne - 30.61%
  • Cumberland - 29.30%
  • Casey - 28.30%
  • McCreary - 25.51%
  • Clinton - 24.50%
Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 9.88%.

Deaths: We regret we must report 8 new deaths since our last report. We have experienced a total of 477 deaths resulting in a 1.99% mortality rate (about 1 in 50) among known cases. This compares with a 1.51% mortality rate at the state level and a 1.75% mortality rate at the national level. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the families and friends who have lost loved ones.

Total (Cumulative) Cases: The Lake Cumberland District has experienced a total of 23,958 cases since the onset of the outbreak. This means that 11.47% of our total population has been a confirmed case. However, we do not know how many additional people may have had COVID-19 and were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and never tested. Of our total cases, 0.66% are reinfections, and 2.77% contracted the virus after being fully vaccinated (breakthrough cases). In the last week, 12.78% of our new cases were breakthrough cases.

Released (Not contagious) Cases: We released 94 cases since our last report from isolation. Released cases include: Adair: 9; Casey: 3; Clinton: 6; Cumberland: 1; Green: 7; McCreary: 5; Pulaski: 44; Russell: 10; Taylor: 8; and, Wayne: 1. In all, we have released 96.1% of our total cases.

Active (Current) Cases: Taking into account deaths and releases, our active cases decreased by 1 more than the new cases we added since our last report. This leaves us with 468 active cases in our district across all 10 of our district's 10 counties. On 12/10/2020 we were at our peak number of active cases, 1,338.

Where Did Cases Visit Prior to Isolation: The most common places cases visited prior to isolation are (in descending order): Travel Related, Businesses, Schools, and Medical Facilities. Of our active cases, 20% can not be tied back to another known case (community-spread cases).

New Cases: We report that our total case count has increased by 102 since our last report. Our new cases (including suspect cases) are as follows: Adair: 9; Casey: 8; Cumberland: 1; Green: 6; McCreary: 11; Pulaski: 42; Russell: 6; Taylor: 13; and, Wayne: 6. Our current new case growth rate is: 1.00318. This means our total case count is projected to double every 218.33 days. The most new cases we ever added in a single day was on 12/30/2020 when we added 301 cases.

Tonight we report 8 deaths for the district. Two of the deaths were recent and involved Pulaski County residents: an 82 year old individual who was hospitalized, and a 79 year old individual who had previously been released from isolation but later succumbed to the lasting effects of the illness. The remaining six deaths were identified by the state during a routine audit of death certificates. They include: 74 year old individual from Casey County, a 78 year old individual from Pulaski County, a 94 year old individual from Pulaski County, a 78 year old individual from Russell County, a 51 year old individual from Taylor County and a 72 year old individual from Wayne County.

Recommending it - get the vaccine

2021-08-04 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
There was unanimous agreement between these three after Monday night's City Council meeting in Columbia - they're vaccinated and recommend it for everyone who is eligible to just get it done! From left are CPD Chief Jr Murphy and Council Members Mark Harris and Robert Flowers.

The COVID-19 vaccine is safe and very effective according to our Health Department. Of the new cases diagnosed since the vaccine became available, over 97 percent have been among UN-vaccinated residents.
