Another Shot at a Million winner announced

Governor encourages Kentuckians to get vaccinated, enter for the third and final $1M drawing at shotatamillion.ky.gov

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear congratulated the second set of winners in Kentucky's Shot at a Million sweepstakes, the state's vaccine incentive program to encourage Kentuckians to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

"Congratulations to all of our winners! When you're the Governor you get to do a lot interesting things, but getting to tell folks they just won a million dollars or that their kid's education is taken care of, that's pretty high on the list of duties I look forward to," said Gov. Beshear. "Now, with the delta variant surging, it's more important than ever that we talk about why we're doing this drawing in the first place. We did it to encourage everyone to get vaccinated. Everyone eligible should sign up for a vaccine and the remaining drawing as soon as possible."

The Governor said the second drawing was conducted Thursday, randomly selecting one adult Kentuckian for the $1 million prize and five youth to receive full-ride scholarships to a Kentucky public college, university, technical or trade school.

The winner of the $1 million prize is Ginger Schultz from Louisville. Ginger's husband, Michael Essen, also attended the news conference Friday.

KAFC reaches $100M in assets milestone

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Agricultural Finance Corporation achieved a financial milestone this spring when it reached more than $100 million in total assets.

The Kentucky Agricultural Finance Corporation (KAFC) is the lending arm of the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board (KADB). Together, under the Kentucky Office of Agricultural Policy, the two work in concert to distribute funds from the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement. The 1998 agreement, requires tobacco companies to pay settling states, including Kentucky, annual installments.

The financial milestone came after KADB committed $5 million to KAFC during its May 2021 meeting. Since 2003, the KADB has invested $80 million in KAFC for loans. The additional $20 million in assets includes loans approved by KADB and then transferred to KAFC and interest payments made on all loans over the years.

Carol Perkins: Where are they now?

Previous Column: Lanny Nunn and Olivia de Havilland

By Carol Perkins

In continuing my story about former Metcalfe Countian Lannes Nunn, I thought of the many other graduates who moved away shortly after graduation and wonder where they are. Each senior class was special, and after the many years I spent in the classroom, I might forget a face but seldom a name even though not a location. Facebook has kept people in touch.

Lannes (known to us as Lanny) credits hairdresser Fanny Fields of Edmonton as his inspiration to become a hairdresser and his father for believing so strongly in education. "He told Stephania and me that we could never have enough education," said Lannes. During his fifty-six years in the business, he studied at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London. Not bad for a small-town boy from a town of a thousand people.

Although meeting Olivia de Havilland and doing her hair four times in four days was one of the highlights of his career, Lannes said he met many celebrities while working at the Executive Inn in Owensboro.

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Campbellsville, KY - On Thursday, July 29, 2021, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) unveiled new signage renaming a portion of Kentucky Highway 55 in Taylor County in honor of Sergeant David R. Gibbs, who was involved in a fatal crash in 2015, while on duty. KSP was joined by Sergeant Gibbs' family, Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Deputy Secretary Ronnie Bastin and KYTC Chief District Engineer for the Department of Highways, Paul Sanders.

"I appreciate KSP and KYTC for paying tribute to Sgt. Gibbs' heroic and courageous dedication when he answered the call to serve and protect Kentucky," said Gov. Beshear. "The commonwealth will never forget the contributions made by Sgt. Gibbs."

During the roadway dedication, KSP Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr. thanked Sgt. Gibbs and his family for serving the commonwealth. "Sgt. Gibbs spent most of his seventeen years of service at Post 15 Columbia, except for six months at Post 12 Frankfort when he promoted to sergeant in 2006. He loved being a trooper and he loved serving the people of this community on a daily basis."
