July is Kentucky-Grown Cut Flower Month

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Nothing says summer like fresh flowers. This July, the Kentucky Department of Agriculture and the Kentucky Horticulture Council (KHC) are celebrating that fact with the second annual Kentucky Grown Cut Flower Month.

"Nothing brightens a room more than the addition of beautiful flowers," Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles said. "Flowers grown in Kentucky offer just a piece of what makes Kentucky beautiful. Bringing that beauty inside your home, your business, or adding it to your summer wedding celebrates what Kentucky's farmer-florists provide for consumers."

With the number of farmer-florists increasing by more than 30 percent in the last five years, Kentucky is now home to more than 90 cut flower operations with a market value of about $0.5 million. To celebrate the special beauty these farmer-florists produce, each day in July, the Kentucky Horticulture Council will feature cut flower growers across KHC's social media channels.

This event is the second annual Kentucky Grown Cut Flower Month co-hosted by KHC and University of Kentucky Horticulture Extension Agents. Each day will feature snippets on how Kentucky's farmer-florists make their products available to customer through farmers markets, on-farm sales, pop-up shops, CSA deliveries, and more.

Tommy Druen: Duke University is getting it right

Previous Column: What does it mean to get back to normal?

By Tommy Druen

Now, as a Kentuckian, I understand that I just lost a lot of readers. And those of you who have made it this far may simultaneously be trying to remember the difference between heresy and blasphemy. And while I may unintentionally be guilty of both at times, I ask you to stick with me here.

Although I may read more sports columns than any other topic, this is not one. So momentarily put the thoughts of Coach K, the Cameron Crazies and . . . *gasp* . . . "the shot" out of your mind and think about Duke University, the institution; one of the premier bastions of academic thought in our nation for nearly two hundred years.

This past week, I read an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal by John Rose. Dr. Rose holds a PhD in theology and is a highly lauded professor in Duke's Kenan Institute for Ethics. The title of his piece was "How I Liberated My College Classroom."

The issue of political biases in college classrooms has always interested me. As a college student who was politically active, I was always keenly aware I might need to temper my thoughts in case they conflicted with those of my professor. Fortunately, it was not really an issue for me, but I knew of others for which it was. So, Dr. Rose's headline worked well and pulled me into reading the full piece.

I was surprised by what I read.

Firework safety information from Campbellsville Fire - Rescue

By Chief Chris Taylor
Campbellsville Fire - Rescue

As the July 4th holiday weekend is rapidly approaching, I want to remind you of some common-sense safety tips while you celebrate. We want you to have a fun and safe season. Be safe with fireworks (preferably leave it to the professionals), wear your lifejacket on the water and drive safely.

Firework Safety Information
The numbers speak for themselves. According the National Safety Council (CPSC) last year 15,600 people were treated in Emergency Rooms for firework injuries. 18 people lost their lives. 66% of those injuries occurred around the July 4th holiday and 1,600 were firecracker-related and 900 were sparkler-related.

Campbellsville Firework Ordinance Information
A new ordinance was introduced in May 2021 by the Campbellsville City Council describing the use of fireworks in the Campbellsville City Limits.
