Letter: Maybe Eastern Milk Snake?

Jill Petrey writes:
I also do not believe this is a copperhead. The head is too small and the pattern does not match. Could it possibly be an Eastern Milk Snake?

CFR performs Technical Rope Rescue at Turkey Bluff

By Chief Chris Taylor
Campbellsville Fire-Rescue

On Saturday, May 29, 2021, Campbellsville Fire Rescue Special Operations was dispatched to Robing Road to a multi-victim rope rescue situation with 2 adults and 1 dog over a 300 foot bluff off of Turkey Bluff Trail at Green River Lake.

Rescuers deployed Zodiac 1 and USACE watercraft under the victims location, in the event they fell down the bluff before our arrival.

Upon arrival at the accident site, firefighters assessed the situation and had 1 patient approximately 50' down the bluff in a stable situation leaning on a large tree. The second victim and dog was approximately 150' over the bluff on a small sapling approximately 10' from a 100' vertical drop off into Green River Lake.

A high angle rope rescue system was set up and a rescuer was lowered down to the victim. The rescuer placed the victim and the dog in a harness. Once the victim was secured, a haul team raised the victim using a compound mechanical advantage system.

Once the 1st victim was rescued, the efforts then shifted to the second victim. Another rescuer was lowered down and put the patient in a harness and he was hauled up via mechanical advantage. Both victims and the Black Lab, named Goose, was tired but refused medical transport.

Tommy Druen: What does it mean to get back to normal?

"Let us aspire for more than normal. Let us trade in normalcy for greatness."

By Tommy Druen

In 1920, then U.S. Senator Warren G. Harding made his successful campaign for president. It was something of a surprise to the nation, if not to Harding himself. He had hardly distinguished himself in his one term in the Senate. Even at his party's convention, Harding did not gain a lead until the 9th ballot, winning it on the 10th. And, upon being nominated, The New York Times offered what had to have been the most back-handed compliment ever by stating he was "a very respectable Ohio politician of the second class."

So how did Harding pull off the upset over James Cox and Franklin D. Roosevelt? Like much in politics, it was timing. In November 1920, Americans were less than a year removed from the end of World War I, the First Red Scare, and the Spanish Flu. Harding, a former journalist, hit upon the slogan of "A Return to Normalcy." In a time of upheaval, he promised a return to days past when people knew what to expect. It worked and the second-class politician won the presidency in a popular and electoral landslide.

Unfortunately for our nation, the day he was inaugurated was probably the highlight of the Harding presidency. Major scandals, both governmental and extramarital, plagued Harding during the two and a half years he served in office before his untimely death.

Daniel Hedges working to get DoorDash option in Columbia

Daniel Hedges is planning to be available as a DoorDash driver for the Columbia area this summer, but Hedges says that people need to contact local restaurants if they'd like to see the option become a reality.

"I cannot do this myself. Contact on Facebook or call places," Hedges says, "Demand drives business. Otherwise, they will not keep service here. Some of these businesses are not even aware. Again, I am driving this summer. I have other obligations, but I will offer this service most nights I am in town between 4pmCT and 9pmCT. I will work as much as possible that fits my schedule."

DoorDash allows restaurants to offer online ordering and delivery without having to invest in computer infrastructure, web design, or insurance and employees for delivery. Participating restaurants typically pay doordash a 15-40 percent commission on orders booked through the service. DoorDash drivers are paid some by DoorDash, and can receive additional tips from customers.

Hedges thinks DoorDash would provide "a modern service to Columbia, KY. You simply go online or your phone. There is a small delivery fee, but they offer some free delivery."
