Traffic Advisory: US 68 between Campbellsville and Lebanon

By Chris Jessie, KYTC-D04

Elizabethtown, KY - A project to add alternating passing sections along US 68 between Campbellsville and Lebanon begins next week. As part of the Heartland Parkway Corridor, the 2+1 configuration will be familiar to motorists who travel KY 55 between Columbia and Campbellsville.

Work starts Monday, May 24, on the Lebanon end of the project along the westbound lane side. Construction will move toward Campbellsville and be under way through the entire corridor by mid-summer. Work will be phased to minimize impacts to traffic and maximize safety and efficiency.

Both directions of traffic will be maintained during the project with occasional delays possible for equipment and material mobilizations. Motorists should pay close attention to signs, slow down and exercise additional caution when traveling through the area, especially when workers are present.

Moody's: KY economy entering new year with gusto

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Citing widespread vaccinations and an early reopening, a second major rating agency has published a positive economic outlook for Kentucky. The Moody's Analytics report is the latest in a string of positive economic news highlighting that the commonwealth is poised to prosper as the state emerges from the pandemic.

The report notes "mass vaccinations will be the driving force behind a sustained recovery in consumer services," "the state's recovery has benefited from earlier reopening efforts and increased demand for manufactured goods over services," that Kentucky's "manufacturing industry has outperformed the nation's" since an initial downturn nationally last year and "payroll employment surged in the first quarter and is now 4.9% below its pre-pandemic level, which is slightly better than the national average."

"Consumer industries are ripe for a rebound as mass vaccinations pave the way for increased local spending in the second half of 2021," according to the Moody's analysis.

State tackling findings of child trafficking study

From Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen/Susan Dunlap/Julie Heflin

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Wednesday said a $1 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will help the state address key findings of the University of Louisville (UofL) Human Trafficking Research Initiative's Project PIVOT: Prevention and Intervention for Victims of Trafficking, a two-year research project.

When Gov. Beshear served as Attorney General, his office collaborated with Project PIVOT on the research. Now that he is Governor, his administration is working to carry out the project's recommendations, which include the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS) creating an advisory council; launching a human trafficking and child labor screening tool to identify high-risk children; and hiring a full-time child protection specialist.

"I have always made seeking justice for victims and fighting human trafficking part of my core mission," the Governor said. "The resources made possible through this grant will allow my administration to address research findings that will help us to better fight this scourge of human trafficking and save lives. I would like to thank Dr. Middleton and her team for their hard work in this crucial area."

LWC Softball season comes to a close with extra-innings loss

By Kyrin Mayfield

The 2021 season comes to a close for the Lindsey Wilson softball team. The Blue Raiders lost 2-1 to Saint Xavier (IL) in extra innings on Tuesday at Sparks Park and were eliminated from the NAIA Opening Round.

It was all about the pitching early on. Hannah Epperson got the start inside the circle and was effective over the first three innings. She kept the Cougars (35-3) hitless and struck out three.

However, in the fourth frame, Saint Xavier began the inning with two singles from a bunt and a weakly-hit ground ball. With a runner in scoring position, the Cougars capitalized on the opportunity with a one-out base hit to start the scoring.
