Billboard needs improvement

2021-04-30 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Tommy Bailey.
Tommy Bailey spotted this aging billboard near the Transfer Station. He writes, "Once upon a time I'm sure this billboard has seen better days, but the way it stands now it's somewhat of an eyesore. It's very visible from the Parkway, and if restored would be very beneficial to some business."

Doug Beard writes, "Wishing everyone a great Oaks and Derby Weekend! There truly is no other event like the first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Derby. These are images from my photo files. There is no other sound like the thunder of the horses as they head for the finish line. Capturing these images while being at ground level among a sea of photographers is an awesome experience."

149th anniversary of the Bank of Columbia robbery

By JIM

April 29, 2021 marks the 149th anniversary of the Bank of Columbia robbery and the murder of cashier R.A.C. Martin.

Decades later, Judge Herschel Clay Baker wrote of his neighbor's death,
"Without warning and at his post of duty he was suddenly shot down, and his home was made desolate. At noon on the 29th of April, 1872, he was seated at his mid-day meal with his wife--happy in her love and in the prospects of a prosperous future which seemed to await him. An hour later the assassins had done their bloody work and his faithful wife, crushed and brokenhearted, was weeping over his lifeless body. That night, with the tolling of the bells and with the sincere sorrow of the community, the hearse drove out of town carrying his remains for interment at his old home in Shelby county...

"Looking back to-day through the long years that have intervened, the deed of that bloody afternoon has lost none of its enormity. Time has not softened any of its features, and the fact that it was done in open day makes it none the less a crime. It was a cruel, cold-blooded murder, committed for gain. We have no patience with the false and sickly sentiment which would make heroes of its authors."

Carol Perkins: Eighteen Again

Previous Column: Three women and Guy

By Carol Perkins

By next Tuesday, I will have wrapped my arms around my son, his wife, and our three grandchildren for the first time since Christmas of 2019.

When we were deciding on a date to travel (after all adults had been vaccinated), we had two choices, and I wanted both. Luke, our oldest grandson, turns eighteen on May 6th. On June 2nd, he graduates from Anderson High School in Austin, Texas. (This school is larger than Edmonton.) My idea was to fly down for his birthday and then take a driving trip (17 hours) for his graduation. Guy opposed. "I'm too old for two trips "back to back."

I don't call three weeks "back to back." However, each graduate was issued only four tickets, which covers his mom, dad, brother, and sister. I never dreamed I would not be part of my grandson's graduation, but Covid has caused many disappointments.

As for Luke's birthday, Guy had a clever idea.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 4/29/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

We added fewer cases today than for the same time period last week, so our 7-day average incidence rate per 100,000 went down also.

Our 7-day average incidence chart is now showing 1 county in the "green-on-track" range, Clinton; 6 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, and Wayne; and 3 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Adair, Casey, and Taylor. We are thankful to not have any "red-critical" counties now. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 3.11%.
