LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief 4/26/2021

By Amy Tomlinson
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The CDC and the FDA have approved the resumption of utilizing the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. We will be resuming Johnson and Johnson clinics soon.

We added fewer cases today than for the same time period last week, so our 7-day average incidence rate per 100,000 went down also. Our 7-day average incidence chart is now showing 8 counties in the "yellow-community-spread" category, Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, McCreary, Pulaski, Russell, and Wayne; and 2 counties in the "orange-accelerated" range of community-spread: Casey, and Taylor. We are thankful to not have any "red-critical" counties now. Keep in mind, some of our 7-day-incidence data will be skewed over the next few days as we are reconciling our data against the state data.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 3.15%.

Mask mandate changing for smaller, outdoor events

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear announced 1,726,346 Kentuckians have received at least their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Governor said beginning tomorrow, based on recent studies and Kentucky's increasing number of vaccinations, the statewide mask mandate will no longer be in effect when Kentuckians are outside at events or venues with 1,000 people or fewer.

"What this means is at events like the Kentucky Derby, you still have to wear a mask, but if you're at a backyard barbeque, your community pool or an outdoor wedding, you're not required to wear a mask," said Gov. Beshear. "We hope this is a relief for people, and remember, the state will be able to lift even more restrictions once the 2.5 million vaccine Team Kentucky Vaccination Challenge is reached."

Masks are still recommended at outdoor events with 1,000 people or fewer, and the mask mandate is still in effect when Kentuckians are indoors or at any outdoor event with more than 1,000 people.

April 25-May 1 is Ed Brown Society Week in Kentucky

African American contributions to horse racing recognized ahead of Kentucky Derby 147

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear signed a proclamation naming April 25 - May 1 Ed Brown Society Week in the commonwealth, recognizing African Americans' contributions to horse racing ahead of the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby (photos here).

"In the 1800s and early 1900s, the majority of jockeys were African Americans. But, despite their centuries of contributions, after World War I, African Americans were pushed out of the sport," said Gov. Beshear. "I am proud to recognize the Ed Brown Society, an organization helping right this wrong by providing mentorship to the next generation of African American Kentuckians in the horseracing industry."

The Ed Brown Society is named after Edward D. Brown, who was born into slavery in Lexington in 1850, but through his tenacity and love of the sport developed into one of the most accomplished African American horsemen in the history of thoroughbred racing.
