CMS students win at national Junior Beta convention

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville Middle School students won big, once again, at this year's National Junior Beta convention, coming home with a national officer and national champion.

Jacyln Jackson, who will be an eighth-grader this year, was elected to serve as the National Junior Beta president.

Jackson was elected as the Kentucky Junior Beta vice president at the state convention in January, which qualified her to run for the national office.

She is the third CMS student in school history to be elected to a national office, and the first to be elected as a state and national president.

Governor's Sunday update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - As of 1 p.m. Aug. 2, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 31,185 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 463 of which were newly reported Sunday. Eleven of the newly reported cases were from children age 5 and younger.

"We appear to be seeing what we all hope is a plateau in the alarming growth of coronavirus cases in the commonwealth," the Governor said. "It shows that wearing a mask, social distancing and not traveling to virus hot spots is working. We need to see this trend continue to avoid having to make more hard choices and sacrifices."

March 22, 1978 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the March 22, 1978 issue of the Daily Statesman. This one was nearly all politics, including Judge White's run for the Supreme Court (he seems to have gotten there in by the mid-80's), whether Gene Huff could give Dee Huddleston a run for his money, speculation about Jody Richards' next steps, speculation about Richard Lee Walker running for Commissioner of Agriculture, the Metcalfe Countians who might run if Walker didn't, and Gaylon Yarberry's sign at the Burger Queen (does anyone have more information on a "Wagner Board"?) --Pen

Former Columbia minister to run for Supreme Court
Doug Moseley is not the only Columbia clergyman to succeed in politics. Former Columbia-Union Presbyterian Minister John D. White, who is now an appellate judge, is announcing a try for a higher position, a seat on the Kentucky Supreme Court from Kentucky's Third Supreme Court District.

White is running for the seat now held by Pleas Jones, who is not seeking another term. Jones was originally appointed to fill the unexpired term caused by the death of Judge Homer Neikirk on what was then the Court of Appeals.

The Third District includes 28 counties: Adair, Anderson, Bell, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Green, Jackson, Knox, Larue, Laurel, Leslie, Lincoln, Marion, McCreary, Metcalfe, Monroe, Nelson, Owsley, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell, Spencer, Taylor, Washington, Wayne and Whitley.

More in Senate race
The race for U.S. Senator seems a little more heated now. Few political observers give anybody a chance of beating incumbent Senator Walter "Dee" Huddleston. The recent announcement of Dr. Oline Carmichael of Williamsburg didn't have any of Huddleston's supporters worried.

But now, a somewhat more formidable opponent is ready to announce.

Let's Take Our Stand

By Phillip Coffey

Sitting on the creek bank in my ole blue jeans.
Pondering how to get the fish out of the water.
"Doofus" playing with his deceased featherless foul.
Bemused with everything seemingly gone amuck.

Thinking of things that have not nor ever will ever be
Turn to the Master he has the plan;
With Peace in the Valley and calmness on the Sea.
With love for another ''let's take our stand.'
