Letter: Where to go for testing?

Maury Lewis writes:
I would like to be tested. I have no symptoms. I am moving and want to make sure I don't take anything with me when I go. Where can I be tested and do I need anything from my doctor to be checked? -- Maury

September 10, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener

The article below first appeared in the September 10, 1977 issue of the Daily Statesman. Topics included the hospitalization of Mayor W.R. Murphy, Dr. Jerry Oakley's move to Springfield, TN, a dispute over the color of coffee, Depp's Restaurant in Edmonton, and the budding medical career of then three-year-old Shawn Goodpaster. --Pen

By Ed Waggener

It has been disappointing to hear of the hospitalization of Mayor W.R. Murphy, who was taken to Adair Memorial Hospital Thursday morning. A spokesman said that Dr. Murphy is suffering from an "extensive hypertensive condition." He is under the care of his old friend and family physician, Dr. J.C. Salato. Someone has to be in attendance in Mayor Murphy's room at all times, his wife, Maggie Murphy, said. The mayor has been feeling much better at times, Mrs. Murphy says, but she is cautious about calling his overall condition improved.

He is able to see some friends, however, such as Bill Cooley.
Like Mayor Murphy or not, everyone in Columbia has to admit that he is a fighter. He never let an adversary get him down, and with the prayers of the people this week-end, he won't let this bout with high blood pressure get him either.

A good man is leaving Columbia
Sunday evening, September 4, there will be a farewell fellowship for Dr. Jerry Oakley and family at the Columbia Baptist Church. Dr. Oakley is taking a new pastorate at Springfield, Tennessee. He has been quite active and influential in the affairs of the community as well as those of the church. He will be missed by a great many here. The local Baptists have a public committee composed of Bobby Beard, Hunter Durham, Crawford Loy, Dr. M.C. Loy, and Delmer Upchurch, with Mrs. Hunter Durham and Delmar Jessie, Jr., serving as alternates. They are seeking a replacement for Dr. Oakley at this time.

Coffee colored?
Doug Beard, the college boy son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Beard of Lowe's Lane, described one of his teachers as having "coffee-colored" hair. The first time Mrs. Beard and Doug encountered the teacher at the same time, Mrs. Beard was surprised after hearing Doug's description to have met a blonde.

Governor: Highest One-Day Total of New COVID-19 cases

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear on Sunday announced the largest single-day total of new COVID-19 cases in the commonwealth and warned that Kentuckians could face dire days ahead without renewed efforts by everyone to rein in the virus' spread.

As of 4 p.m. July 19, Gov. Beshear said there were at least 23,161 coronavirus cases in Kentucky, 979 of which were newly reported Sunday. Thirty cases were from children five-years-old or younger.

"We typically have limited reporting on Sunday which makes today's record-setting number of positives particularly alarming," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Department for Public Health. "In the interest of accuracy, we are going to reach out and confirm results with some of the major labs. Even so, this surge in positive cases is a shocking wake-up call. Kentucky has flattened the curve before and it must act immediately and decisively to flatten it again. Please, wear your mask and socially distance."

"This ought to be a wake-up call for everybody. This is a rough day for the commonwealth," said Gov. Beshear. "Thirty children under five who have tested positive. Thirty families whose parents and caregivers are hurting more than anything we can imagine."

Mike Watson: Bears once were everywhere in Adair

An Ancient Bear Story of Adair County--

By Mike Watson

Bears are upon our turf once more, it appears. There was a time, in ancient time, if you will, when the bear and other animals of the wild were everywhere and there are a few tales from those years that have survived in one form or other. Here is one from the pioneer era, likely before 1789, as told by Adair County Jurist and Historian Judge Rollin T. Hurt in his newspaper history of the area. This is likely as true a tale as can be found anywhere for it was often told around the hearths for generations. Judge Hurt was a grandson of pioneers and certainly was privy to these stories from those who knew the participants very well.

Upon one occasion when [Major Nathan] Montgomery and Captain John Butler were doing duty as spies [diligent watch for Indian sign], they started from Logan's Fort, near the present site of Stanford, with the purpose of visiting the country which is now in middle Tennessee; and when upon the waters of Casey's Creek in [what became] Adair County they killed a bear, which they skinned and dressed; and, taking a small quantity of the meat for use, they sewed the remainder of it in the skin of the bear, which they hung in the boughs of a tree.

Where were you when Kennedy was shot?

Ralph Waggener asked this question and it popped into the news feeds of his Facebook friends, "Do you remember where you where when President Kennedy being shot was announced?"

His own personal memory - I was setting on the counter at Harry Lee Dohoney's station talking to Billy Ray Dohoney!

Following are a few of those who shared memories with Ralph...
