GRAS says thank you to ACES students for gifts

By Tammy Campbell, Director at Green River Animal Shelter

We were totally surprised this week when we got donations from Adair County Elementary Students! Their teacher told us they did this on their own and it was their idea.

We would greatly like to say thank you to  Isaac Hawkins, Dakota Espinoza, Kendy Burton, Harli Polk, and Anika Jennings, all of Columbia, for the wonderful donations to our shelter.

The animals will love them!  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Remembering Will Dohoney

By Martha Henry Berry

There have been several posts about the characters who have lived in Columbia, but no one has mentioned Will Dohoney. He roamed the square in the 1940s and probably early- to mid-1950s.

Will was a big man, had a speech impedediment and was slow in his thinkng. Even though he was a member of the Christian Church, he knew all the Methodist preachers for miles around. He collected small change from the people on the Square, usually asking for a nickel. Someone once asked why he didn't ask for a dime, as they were worth more. His answer was that if he did, people would stop giving him money.

With the money that he collected, he bought neckties for many of the Methodist preachers on their birthdays. I don't know how he knew the preachers and certainly did not know how he knew their birthdays.

Dad had several of them. I think of Will every time I drive out Fairground St.

Sen. Max Wise's Legislative Update - March 6, 2020

Personal political commentary/opinions of the writer

By State Senator Max Wise, (R-Campbellsville)
16th District: Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, McCreary, Russell, Taylor, and Wayne Counties

Two hundred eighty-six bills in 40 days.

That's the number of Senate bills filed by the deadline for legislation to be introduced during the 154th Regular Session of the Kentucky General Assembly. Among those Senate bills were eight addressing public safety, 47 addressing health and medical services, 44 addressing children and minors, and 93 addressing all aspects of public education.

In a sign the 60-day session is heading into the homestretch, the Senate is expected to receive the general fund budget bill from the House next week. The Senate Appropriations & Revenue Committee will then consider the bill and propose changes based on the chamber's priorities. Majority caucus leadership has publicly said they intend to pass a budget before April 1, giving the legislature the ability to override any line-item vetoes to the budget.

Here are some of the bills that cleared the Senate during the ninth week of the session:

In search of the right Marcum cousins

By Linda Marcum Waggener

My sister and I are looking for members of the Marcum family from the Green and Metcalfe County areas of Kentucky in hopes that a collection of family pictures can get into the right hands.

The collection came to me because my maiden name is Marcum, however, these would be distant cousins. The more closely related Marcums who should have these pictures will be descendants of Sam Marcum who married Cora Reynolds. They had one son, Leonard Marcum.

Letter: Thanks Jerry Antle for picking up the trash

Steve Coomer writes:

"I would like to extend thanks to Jerry Antle and his crew for picking up litter on Lampton Lane. They did a great job!" - SC

Steve, thank you for writing and affirming the County's good works.

Also Mayor Hoots reported over 40 bags of trash were picked up this week inside the city limits.

Now is the time to get trash cleared from the roadsides - it's so visible in spring rains and it's better to get it picked up now before weeds and grasses grow up around it, mowing begins and trash gets scattered in more places, in smaller pieces. - LW
