Sharks in Kentucky? Mind-blowing Mammoth Cave find

By Emma Austin, Louisville Courier Journal

During a trip to Mammoth Cave National Park in November, paleontologist John-Paul Hodnett was stunned. Preserved in the walls of the cave were parts of a large, fossilized shark head -- from a shark that lived about 330 million years ago.

The discovery began when Mammoth Cave specialists Rick Olson and Rick Toomey came across the fossils as they explored and mapped the cave system. They sent photos to Vincent Santucci, the senior paleontologist for the National Park Service in Washington, D.C., for help identifying the fossils.

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - Governor Andy Beshear outlined his first budget to lawmakers on Tuesday, prioritizing education, health care and protecting our children, underlining his belief that a budget is a statement of values.

Beshear said in his first budget address Tuesday night at the Kentucky Capitol.

Gov. Beshear proposed a balanced, responsible "Education First" budget for 2020-2022 including a $2,000 raise for teachers, 1% SEEK per pupil funding increase providing an additional $87.5 million for public schools, $11 million each year for new textbooks, $18.2 million for school security upgrades, and ending more than a decade of repeated and deep cuts to higher education.

Letter: Closing of Taylor County Schools

Charles Marshburn writes:
What is the nature of the "sickness" that has caused Taylor County Schools to be closed? Should Adair County be concerned? --Charles

Charles, thanks for writing. According to Larry Smith, flu is the offiical reason for the closure. However, flu is already more widespread in Adair than in Taylor County as of the January 24 report from CHFS.

Taylor County has had 7 lab confirmed cases so far this season. Adair County had 9 new cases in the last reporting week, and has a total of 43 this season.

CHFS recommends these Good Health Habits to avoid the spread of germs and viruses:
  • Cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 15-20 seconds or use alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs often are spread when a person touches an object contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Get an annual flu shot to help you develop antibodies to protect against flu infection.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from contracting your illness.
  • Stay home from work, school and errands if possible when you are sick. This will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Letter: So proud of Stacey

Pastor Troy Grider writes:
I am so proud of Stacey in her undying love for her daughter and that love is now being shown through her efforts in loving and reaching out to others who are surrounded by such great darkness.

Stacey, you are a bright light of God's grace that gives us all hope. Hope that we can see our entire community come together to help deliver our children and many others from addiction. It truly is the crumbling of our very foundation as a society and it touches every life from the rich to the poor, those who are educated, those who are not, those with status, and those without. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering you have faced, but we all have been praying for you! You are the bravest woman that I know!! I champion you on and challenge us all to do like Stacey in exhausting all efforts to save our children, families, and neighbors from drug and alcohol addiction.

I implore us all to first pray, then take action, to help the thousands in our community to be set free. God bless you, Stacey, and God bless all of our people! --Pastor Grider

Kentucky Color: Skunk Mating Season

Click to full article for a much more accurate prediction of the start of spring, from GWSU, than you'll find from the modern media darling, the groundhog.

By Billy Joe Fudge

For generations here in the Great Wooded South, we and our forefathers have used nature by the scientific method of observation to predict weather intensity and anomalous seasonal timetables. When it comes to the timing of the arrival of Spring there is one animal renowned for dependability of forecasting, and no, it is not the media darling, headline grabbing, shadow searching, foundation undermining Groundhog!

All of our rural ancestors knew that Skunk mating season began, normally speaking, the first week of February. Because of the Skunk's tendency to offend and overload the olfactory sensory system of a Turkey Buzzard, our urban cousins went in search of a more palatable and less offensive harbinger of the advent of Spring.
