October 19, 1977 Around Adair with Ed Waggener This article first appeared in the October 19, 1977 edition of the Daily Statesman. Topics included an appreciation for Scenic Byways, election news, agriculture advice from A.L. Sinclair, the minimum amount of squirrel that needed to actually be served at the Democratic Party Squirrel Supper, and the connection between the World Series, Davis Hardware, and Paull Drug Company. --Pen By Ed Waggener There comes a point, I guess, when people quit thinking of you as a boy, and start thinking of you as a man. I guess I've reached that stage. I was called by a representative of the Kentucky Press Association who invited me to attend a district meeting of the KPA in Lexington. "Oh yes," she added, "why don't you bring your daughter, Linda, along. She's the editor of the Lincoln County Post, isn't she?" She is that. But Linda is not my daughter. The only thing I could think of to save the day was to lie hard. "She's my wife," I said, and then fibbed, "and she's older than me." "That's nothing to worry about," the lady said, "I'm older than my husband, too." Oh well, at least they've quit coming by the office and asking it my father is in. A good project for Moseley I've always thought it well that Kentucky has the Wild Rivers Act. But there is a more important area which ought to be preserved, besides rivers and old landmark houses. And that is Scenic Roads. Article continues... click title or click here to read whole article. 2019-10-13 12:52:42 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Around Adair with Ed Waggener

Hot properties in Adair County, October 1929 As mid-October 1929 approached, Chevrolet had already produced over 1.2 million vehicles, a "new high record for six-cylinder vehicles." In New Jersey, twenty-two young men were arrested for the heinous crime of playing football on Sunday, and in St. Louis, a newly opened hotel operated exclusively on electricity. Few seemed to notice or care the national financial infrastructure fast approached a calamitous cliff. But meanwhile, back in The Shire... By JIM News of land sales and property improvements occupied a lot of column-inches in the October 15 edition of the News. The Squire John Eubank property on Jamestown Street owned lately by J.H. Judd had been sold by that gentleman to Jacob A. Schuler and wife, the former Miss Eunice Biggs. Mr. Schuler planned to raise the residence by another floor and install water works and several other modern conveniences. Sadly, Mrs. Schuler didn't have long enjoy her new home. An illness made her bedridden in January 1930, and she passed in August that year. Construction on A.H. and Mollie Ballard's new place, a red brick on Bomar Heights, "one of the most desirable residential sections of the town," was coming right along. Built in the New England Colonial style, the Ballards planned to equip their New England Colonial style house with every up-to-date convenience. And too, work on the new Columbia Baptist church structure continued apace. Excited about all the downtown updates By Cayce Davenport Downtown Days was a huge success! Thank you to the intensely passionate Renaissance Committee and their commitment to pulling off another fun filled year. While set up on Campbellsville Street, it was wonderful seeing such a positive reaction from our community to the new addition of Downtown. After all day watching others get their picture in front of the mural, some of which I was happy to take for complete strangers or friends, I realized that I had yet to do so. I finally got to pose with my youngest son. Thank you to Mayor Hoots and City Council for trusting me with such a project! I'm excited about all the Downtown updates and am humbled to have been a part of them. I hope this mural is the first of others to come. We have a strong presence of extremely talented artists from all ends of the spectrum in Adair County. There's loads more where that come from, you only need ask. Thank you! 2019-10-13 07:15:54 | Comments | Printable version
