Dear Faculty/Staff/Community:

Once again, we are about to embark on another boys' basketball season. I am excited about the 2018-2019 basketball season. We have committed student-athletes working hard and putting in the time to help us maximize our potential. They are all excellent young men, who are wonderful leaders for our district. These young men are fun to teach and interact with on a daily basis.

A poem for Veterans Day

By Tommy Melson
We are a nation of people, bound by blood...
and we owe all this to soldiers, who stood before the flood...
For our freedom, they endured the pain...
To keep us from harm, and shelter us from the rain...
Today is their day, and let us give them their due...
So thank a soldier today and everyday, for all they do.

Letter: Remembering Edgar Holmes

Richard Robertson writes:
I have had the priviledge of meeting only one man with the distiction of being a Veteran of two foreign wars, the late Edgar Holmes! Edgar told me a pleasant war time story, once:

He was at a commissary in central Europe during the WW2. In came an Army convoy. My late Uncle, Horace "Sleepy" Stone, was driving a truck in the convoy. With great pleasure, the two young men from "back home", displaced to a different continent to fight a foreign war, were able to greet one another and reminisce during the brief time that was allowed. When leaving, being overwhelmed with excitement, and distracted from his duties, Uncle Sleepy stepped up and into the wrong truck and off he drove, in pursuit of the convoy! --Richard

Letter: Photo tip from Robert Ellis

Robert Ellis writes:
Thanks Linda for your compliment of the Snaggly Old Tree photo. That photo was achieved by using my 70-200mm lens, at a "wide open" f-stop (f2.8) and moving the focal points, in camera, to focus on the tree. That lens is known for giving a desired blur effect (bokeh) in background of given photos; even more so, when shooting wide open. --Robert Ellis

Scott Spires: Knifley's Best, America's Finest - The Greatest Generation

They would be honored to know, that after all these years, our gratitude to the Greatest Generation has not wavered.

By Scott Spires

The ominous clouds of war had stayed in the sky for so long that most Americans had grown complacent with the war rumors. But now; overnight, every American realized the cold hard truth. We are at war! Not only to defend the free world, but also to fight for our very existence as a nation.

From cities, towns, villages and farms across the land, Americans were called to do their duty. Military or civilian, everyone would contribute to the war effort. To underscore just how deadly serious the situation was, no discharge date would be issued to those in the U.S. military. Simply put, you were enlisted until the war ended.

JIM: To all who have served ... a heartfelt thank you

By JIM

One hundred years ago today -- November 11, 1918 -- a representative of Germany signed the long-awaited armistice, and with the flourish of a pen, the sound of war that had reverberated around the world for over four wearying years fell silent.

By the time that document was signed, hundreds of Adair County men had answered their country's call to arms since April '17 , when the US was finally drawn into the fray. Some served stateside, while many others "went across." Of the latter, most returned home, but some died on the battlefield, other died after receiving wounds and being evacuated from the field.

All who served remind us that freedom isn't free, and the memory of those who died evokes Thomas Jefferson's stirring words, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants."
