Wildflowers of KY - Swamp Milkweed, Sulphur Creek Bottomland

2018-08-26 - Taylor Mill Road, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
This week is the first time I've seen Swamp Milkweed, a favorite feast for butterflies, in this pretty pink hue. Usually, Milkweed is spotted in its flaming orange color. It adds a really effective foreground for the Joe Pye Weed and Iron Weed which could be seen in a larger photo. - LW. (Photo Fri 24 Aug 2018, in the evening.)

Beverly Gnau: Lost buddy, lost tie to charity, 'We Care' Burkesville, KY

A good friend's death is grieved and it also means a connection to the Burkesville, KY charity "We Care" is in jeopardy of being lost unless a bridge can be made. Help with a connection would be much appreciated. The "We Care" charity is a local Cumberland County fundraiser with monies only going to local families in need.

Beverly Gnau writes:
I've sent lots and lots of hats down to "We Care" by way of my buddy, Judy Willis Rush. Without her now, I need to know if Hazel still needs those crocheted hats? I've got several made up of the child hats and am working on some for ladies. Hazel will probably know me, and if not ask Jerri Rush. I went to church with Judy and Lyle Rush. Sure do miss Judy. - Beverly Gnau
Thanks for the inquiry - "We Care", from all we've seen of it, is one we're happy to support. Can't give you the information immediately, but we make it a top priority to find your contact information, which may already be posted here on the site - and, as always, if we receive reliable information on your question, we'll post here as soon as possible. - Ed & Linda

Mike Watson: When travel was harder, folks travelled no less

History tells us that in long years past, friends and kin would strike out from Adair County for Missouri, Texas, and destinations more far-flung like Oregon, New Mexico and California, with the idea that they may never have the opportunity to walk the green fields of home again. Some did return, some only hoped to." - MIKE WATSON.

By Mike Watson, Adair County Historian

There was a time when travel was much harder, but that does not mean folks traveled less. In this time of rapid travel, whether by air or surface, we may be across the expanse of the nation in mere hours, or a few days at most.

CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - Sat 25 Aug 2018) - A combined nine turnovers turned what could have been one of the best NAIA matchups to start the 2018 season into a sloppy offensive game and No. 24 Faulkner University took advantage of scoring seven points of five Campbellsville miscues to upend the Tigers, 16-10.

In front of a packed Finley Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the 19th-ranked Tigers fell victim to five turnovers and Faulkner scored all 16 of its points in the final 3:44 in the second quarter.

Rita King: Tips to aid travel from Liberty, KY to 'New Columbia'

Wants better signs to get to New Columbia & Columbia Walmart, when driving from Liberty, KY, finding, as many do, that " . . . Columbia is so confusing to navigate." And would like information for put in/take out at Jamestown's Greasy Creek for kayaking.
Anyone know who the 'powers that be' are to cut through the red tape and see that needed signs posted? Miss Vicky? Shannon Sexton? CJE Stephens? Mayor Hardwick? Local Political Shot-Callers? Is there an election issue here? - EW

I enjoy the photos of kayakers. I have taken up the sport myself to some extent. Can someone please give directions to the put in/take out spots for Greasy Creek??? Hopefully getting there will be easier than deciphering New Columbia's location.

Haiku by Robert Stone for August 26, 2018:

Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers singing "When You Walk the Last Mile of the Way"
This beautiful version of the congregational song which can be heard during the 10amCT, Welcome Service at 92nd Annual Homecoming at Branstetter Park today, Sun 26 Aug 2018, may not be as good as the one to be heard today, nor as haunting a memory for anyone who ever heard the late Ralph Rush lead it, but it powerfully convey's a song which mean's homecoming in so many ways. - EW
