Carol Perkins: Seeing a movie with friends

It was to have been a perfect Saturday. Missed meet-up spoiled it.
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Longing for the times of innocence

By Carol Perkins

A day out of the house; that's what I needed. Get my nails done; have a pedicure; go shopping and then to a movie. What a perfect Saturday!

I was at the Nail Salon by eleven and finished by one thirty. Three hours before the movie, so I went to store number one: piddled around and bought some throw rugs. Store number two: piddle around and bought ink for my printer. Store number three: piddled around and bought a box of flower bulbs that may be dried out. Finally, at four o'clock I had had enough piddling, so I went to the theater.

Too many times, life gets in the way of our goals, passions, and dreams. We've all had these instances, and the measure of a person is how they rise to the occasion. I'm writing to introduce you to local graduate, Ayla Hargis, the first online student at the Campbellsville University Carver School of Social Work to receive the Outstanding Bachelor of Social Work Award. Her success illustrates the need for more local universities to embrace online programs in areas of need, like social work. In Kentucky, Hargis struggled to find a practicum placement due to a shortage of licensed supervisors with social work degrees.

According to J.O.Y. Ministries treasurer Maggie Coleman, donations to the Paz-Holley Project have now increased to $73,000, on its way to the goal of $108,000 needed to completely pay for the house.

The original goal came about from prayers and discussions of how to help five young Adair County children who became homeless when their mother was murdered and their father was taken to jail in October, 2017.
