2018-06-27 - Photo from family collection.

Sending love and prayers for blessings and peace to all those closest to Don Cravens who passed from this life early this evening, June 27, 2018, after a lengthy battle with cancer.

His Uncle Ed Waggener who has known him all his life is remembering Don as "a little boy whose charismatic personality was obvious from day one and only got brighter and better as he lived and grew."

Don's cousin Mitzi Bault wrote, "Heaven just got a Angel. God had Mercy for Don. He is no longer in pain. May our Heavenly Father please wrap your arms around Aunt Jean, Elaine, Beth and all Don’s children and grandchildren."

Services will be held in Indianapolis at a date to be announced later. - Linda Waggener

Carol Perkins: Mr. Perkins has become a tomato farmer

He's a limited edition farmer now, but already he has plans for bigger things plans in mind.
The next earlier column: Carol Perkins: How pant suits have changed lives of women

By Carol Perkins

Guy has become a tomato farmer. A limited edition one since he only set out three plants. He has tried this another time only to grow a couple of tomatoes. "Why don't you drive over the Farmers' Market and buy all you want?" I asked. He assured me they were not the same. One afternoon, he came home with his three little plants and asked my advice about where to plant them. "Why don't you put them in my flower bed where the soil is better since I have enriched it so much over the years?" Off he went with his spade and his plants.

Sycamore Springs: Discovery of an OTC chigger itch arrester

'As many before me, I have tried everything in the medicine cabinet to the cleaning products under the sink to no avail to stop the torturous itching bite, until stumbled upon a remedy . . . ' - CYNTHIA A. MEYER
Click on headline for complete personal commentary on what writer does when chigger-itch-challenged. SEE ALSO: Mike Watson's sad albeit hilarious QAL, Chiggers & a shower + trip to Dr. Loy's. ALSO Wildflowers of KY - Today's Special - Queen Ann's Lace & _____

By Cynthia A. Meyer
Personal opinion of the writer

Being a "Transplant" to Kentucky some 35 yrs ago, ticks and chiggers were something of a relatively new experience. Back then applying clear nail polish to the bite was standard treatment. Assuming the nail polish would smother the chigger, hence ending the itch.

However. according to an old radio segment on Kentucky Afield, the chiggers really don't burrow into the skin, as we were told, they are more of a hit and run varmint. They bite, inject a sort of venom (really it is a digestive enzyme) and once the skin starts to ooze, they hurriedly lap up the fluid and are gone. Much like the hit and run driver that tags your car while you are in Walmart shopping.
