George Kolbenschlag: Thanks, JIM for Charles G. Austin story George Kolbenschlag writes: Thanks to JIM for his appropriate Memorial Day remembrance of Seaman 1st Class Charles Garnett Austin, who was killed just off-shore from New Caledonia in 1943. It's not the soldiers and sailors who determine when to dispatch our best and brightest to war. I sometimes wonder if some of those who do so would be as quick to send our sons and daughters off to fight wars if they had experienced war themselves. Thanks, JIM for reminding us these are our own mother, fathers and children who fight the wars. - George KolbenschlagComments re article 97586 Freedom isn't free In memory of S1c Charles Austin Garnett 19241943 2018-05-28 13:18:52 | Comments | Printable version

Day lilies scattered along roadways should be left unmown On less traveled byways, leaving natural beauty should not cause mowing crews any problems< Click on headline for editorial with photo(s) By Joyce M. Coomer Guest editorial Day lilies patches are scattered along the roadsides in the area and grace us with brilliant blooms in the summer. I think it would be nice for the road crews, when mowing, to leave these spots unmown so that the lilies can bloom freely and brighten a drive to town. I know it would be more difficult to do on heavily traveled roads but on roads such as the one I live on, with light traffic at slower speeds, the road crews should be able to either raise up the mower or drive around these patches of flowers. - Joyce M. Funding, and, for a starter and a more formalized relationship between the town & county might be another. And perhaps it's time for a Flower Power Foundation to be established. Ideas would be welcome on the pragmatic side of the proposal. - EW 2018-05-28 08:59:50 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local Arts Scene
Phyllis Gooden: Agrees, parking should be for customers only Writer agrees with Vonnie K that parking should only be used by customers Phyllis Gooden writes: So true, Mrs Kolbenschlag! I've been told the same thing by office staff/business owners, "I follow the two hour restrictions." They come & go throughout the day as if it's their own private spaces. It's sad when we don't respect & support our local businesses who may struggle to make ends meet. So many have closed their doors during my 15 years on the square and I believe the parking issue has a direct impact!!!Comments re article 97569 V Kolbenschlag Parking spaces should be for customers only 2018-05-28 08:08:11 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Commentary

I have been through all of them now, covering more than 1,800 days. It's not written 'for' Memorial Day but the final line 'with spring just beyond' might well be what those who fought were looking forward to.
