The Columbia/Adair County Economic Development Authority meeting, this morning, Tuesday, March 20, 2018, provided reason for optimism for major breakthroughs, including a path to a new home for the Adair County Fair and kick-starting a major expansion possibility for ATS Mobility in Green River Commerce Park.

Driving around the square: City Council might pass a law . . .

PERSONAL COMMENTARY - 1) A change in driver behavior 2) Consideration of a new City Ordinance on use of cell phones

By Joyce Coomer

The courthouse has been in that location for more than 200 years. The additions have been there since the 1970's or so. (Need to check date on that.) I was taught there was only ONE lane of traffic around the square, not two as some people think and that lane is wide to allow for tractor-trailers.

I don't know what the current problem is with yield signs as they've been in those locations for years but I have a sneaking suspicion is is a very common problem -- drivers utilizing mobile communication devices and drivers unaccustomed to the traffic patterns in Columbia trying to rely on a GPS unit for directions instead of paying attention to their driving.

How about the city council passing a "no electronic communication device, no GPS use inside the city limits" regulation, with the exception of emergency personnel -- only while on an emergency run of some sort, I might add. I know this would infringe on some people's addiction to cell phones but as Columbia isn't the size of New York City, that infringement wouldn't last very long.

Joyce M. Coomer

Vonnie Kolbenschlag thinks removal of box additions would help

HIstoric courthouse would be more stately without the box - or wing additions, Vonnie Kolbenschlag says
About: Comments re photo 77760 Sat 17 Mar 2018 afternoon Another Yield sign destroyed

By Vonnie Kolbenschlag

This photo shows me how stately the historic courthouse might look with the box additions removed. These four boxes just do not do much, in my opinion, to enhance the architectural design of the building. Then too, without the boxes, there would be more green space to landscape and better view of traffic. There would be less area to maintain inside without the boxes also. Removal of the boxes would produce extra bricks that could be used to make beautiful sidewalks. --Vonnie Kolbenschlag
