KY Afield Outdoors: Best Kayaks for Flat Water Fishing

By Lee McClellan

Frankfort, KY - A car, truck or sport utility vehicle with a couple of kayaks on the roof with fishing poles visible through the back window is an increasingly common sight on Kentucky highways.

Sales data shows kayak fishing and related kayak accessories increasing in popularity. Some of this popularity has to do with many baby boomers reaching retirement age and wanting a new hobby.

Price is another aspect of the rise in popularity of kayak fishing. They are a replacement for a fishing boat for many people scared off by the rising cost of power boats.

While many associate kayaks with flowing water, a huge number buy a kayak to fish small lakes, the backwaters of reservoirs, rivers and large farm ponds.

Letter: Solid, scientific speculation on the mystery tree

The Spoke Easy writes:
So, the only story I know came from an elderly man who came into the shop. He claims that the site was an old farm homestead for generations. The tree was growing on top of a cleared hill next to the barn. The barn had chickens that would roost in the tree and as the tree grew, the branches were weighed down and shaped horizontally.

If this were true, then it could be said that once the forest started growing around the tree, the tree had to adapt and radically change the direction of its growth as it began competing for light from the surrounding foliage. Sound like malarkey? Tell me a better story! --The Spoke Easy

Does anyone remember: Very unusual tree?

The tree, a sugar maple, is on Lakeshore trail at Green River Lake State Park. It once had long lateral branches close to the ground, and about seven large vertical branches growing from them. It has most recently been stylized into the logo for The Spoke Easy Bicycle Shop at 225 E. Main in Campbellsville, KY.
Writer/photographer Wayne Baxter is searching for information about that tree from anyone who lived in the area before Green River Dam was built.

By Gil Lawson

Prestonsburg, KY - State and local officals today held a ribbon cutting to celebrate the renovated May Lodge at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, which is now open.

The repairs cost about $1.7 million. They renovations include a new lounge, new furniture, wall covering, flooring, windows and kitchen equipment. Redesign work improved views from the lodge of Dewey Lake. Most of the work is completed.

"Community awareness is key to stopping these predatory scammers," said Sheriff Wright. "Whether they offer to seal your driveway, paint your fence or any other odd job, contact your local sheriff's office immediately if you suspect suspicious activity."

Beshear said not all door-to-door salespersons are scammers and many are honest trying to make a living. Nevertheless, before you commit to a door-to-door sales pitch take time to follow these tips:
