Kentucky businesses set all-time low occupational injury rate

FRANKFORT, KY (Mon 23 Jan 2017) - According to a recent report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Kentucky employers reported the lowest incident rate for nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in the state's history.

Based on a mathematical calculation that describes the number of recordable incidents per 100 full-time employees, Kentucky's rate improved from 3.8 in 2014 to 3.7 in 2015 - reflecting the most recent data available. This rate has steadily declined since it was first calculated in 1996, when a rate of 8.4 was reported.

ACHS students earn 359 college hours in fall semester

Fifty-four students take advantage of low-cost opportunity to jumpstart college careers

Students at Adair County High School are getting an early start on their college journeys by taking courses, either online or on campus, while they're still in high school. Fifty-four juniors and seniors at ACHS took advantage of the opportunity last semester and earned 359 college credit hours in the process.

4-H Wood Working Project Workshop, Thu 9 Mar 2017

A 4-H Wood Working Project Workshop will be offered, at 6pmCT, Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. Four projects are offered: Adair County Napkin/Bill Holder, 4-H Clover Napkin/Bill Holder, Kentucky Napkin/Bill Holder or Regular Napkin/Bill Holder. Registration fee to cover supplies, $7. Hannah Nicole Absher on Dean's List at UPike

Hannah Nicole Absher of Columbia, KY, has been named to the Fall 2016 Dean's List released by the University of Pikeville, Pikeville, KY. To be on the Dean's list students must be full time and have a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.9. Ms. Absher is a student in the Patton College of Education at the University of Pikeville.

The 2016 graduate of Adair County High School (See: Hannah Nicole Absher signs yearbook), was a standout athlete on the Indians Basketball and Softball teams. She is attending UPike on a softball scholarship.

There will be a New Member 4-H Shooting Sports Orientation meeting, at 6pmCT, Thursday, January 26, 2017, at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

The session is for any youth who is interested in participating in the program this next year. This meeting for any youth ages 9-18, who has never participated in the shooting sports program before but would like to start. COLUMBIA, KY - (Mon 23 Jan 2017) Kayla Styles is the Mid-South Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.

The junior forward from Louisville, Kentucky led the fourth-ranked Blue Raiders to a pair of MSC road victories last week. She averaged 21.5 points per game while grabbing 9.0 rebounds per contest and shooting 58.1 percent from the floor. Lindsey Wilson is now 19-0 on the season and 7-0 in conference play atop the Mid-South standings.

Against Georgetown (Ky.), she scored 16 points and had eight rebounds as the Blue Raiders went on to win 85-56. Styles also chipped in with three assists, three blocks and a steal.

In the NAIA Network Game of the Week on Saturday at No. 6 Shawnee State (Ohio), Styles recorded a career-high 27 points and capped off her double-double with 10 rebounds, while tallying another three blocks and a steal en route to Lindsey Wilson's 84-78 win.

Styles earns her first weekly honor of the season and of her career. She becomes the second Blue Raider this season to earn the award after teammate Chanel Roberts claimed the honor last week.

Lexington woman sentenced to 61 months in identity theft case

Tax Refund Scheme. '(Yarelis) Rios previously admitted that from January 2012 to April 2013, she used the identifying information of numerous individuals that she obtained through the course of her employment at various apartment complexes in the Lexington area, to prepare fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. . . Rios prepared and filed a total of 64 fraudulent tax returns in the names of different individuals for tax years 2011 and 2012 that requested refund amounts. The majority of the tax returns specified that the refunds were to be direct deposited into Rios's personal bank account. In total, the 64 fraudulent tax returns filed by Rios requested tax refunds totaling $408,670'

The officer stopped this gentleman and asked him "What are you doing out driving this late and where are you headed? " The gentleman said, "I am headed to a lecture on Alcohol and staying up too late." Now the officer was well aware that no one would be lecturing at this time of morning so he asked the gentleman, "Sir, who would be the lecturer for this topic ?"
