JIM: Clips from 1917, when we flew the flag - even more grandly

Today is FLAG DAY, June 14, 2016. At left, a more recent photo of flag near the historic courthouse. Agents are still searching for a fitting one from 1917.

By JIM

In early April 1917, President Wilson asked Congress for declaration of war against Imperial Germany, The following clips, taken from various editions of the News from 99 years ago this spring, seem appropriate for today, June 14th.

April 4
Old Glory is waving near the basket on the court-house, a hundred feet high. To every true American citizen, and we have no other kind in Adair, the stars and stripes brings to every patriotic bosoms thrilling sensations. There were men in Adair who favored Germany against the British and French, but when our own beloved country is going to take a hand, all hats are lifted to the flag of this country.

April 11
The schools in Columbia and in the county ought to be flying the flag. State Supt. of Schools, Gilbert, is asking by letter, that all county superintendents have flags placed on rural schools. Attorney General Logan has ruled that flags may be legally purchased and raised out of the county school fund.

April 25
A large flag has been ordered from Louisville and when it arrives it will be erected on the court-house cupola, and will wave above the basket.

April 4
A United States flag now floats from the end of a pole seventy-five feet high, on the Post-office corner. The flag was purchased by subscription, and Dr. Jas. Triplett secured the pole and directed, with assistance, the raising of same.

Thank you Judge Stephens and Sen. Wise for getting to the bottom of that mystery.

I messaged Adair County Emergency Management but they weren't sure, either, what was going on.

It sure would be nice if the right hand would tell the left hand what is going on before they fly in over folks houses shaking the windows.
