Lindsey Wilson captures first Learfield Directors' Cup The NACDA Learfield Sports Directors' Cup is an award given annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics to the colleges and universities in the United States with the most success in collegiate athletics. (Wikipedia) After entering the spring season in third place in the Learfield standings, Lindsey Wilson scored 373.25 points -- the most in the NAIA -- during April and May championships to claim the Directors' Cup. By Chris Wells Lindsey Wilson athletics has captured the program's first National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Learfield Directors' Cup, NACDA officials announced on Tuesday. Lindsey Wilson finished with 852.75 points in the yearlong competition. Oklahoma City finished second with 777 points followed by Wayland Baptist (Texas) with 750 points. Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler was presented the Learfield Directors' Cup today at the 2016 NACDA Convention during the awards luncheon. "I want to thank NACDA and Learfield for sponsoring the Directors' Cup and congratulate all the award recipients, especially the athletic directors and student-athletes of the institutions that won the Directors' Cup in the other divisions," Pooler said. "I proudly accept our first Directors' Cup on behalf of our exceptional student-athletes, talented coaches and staff and an administration that so deeply values the impact of competitive, character-driven intercollegiate athletics, on the development and education of our student-athletes." Lindsey Wilson becomes the sixth NAIA institution to win the Directors' Cup in the 21-year history of the award. Blue Raider teams scored in 15 national championships in 2015-16. The NACDA scoring system awards points to the top six women and top six men's finishes at their respective national championship, forcing the omission of three Lindsey Wilson results to produce the Blue Raiders' final tally. After entering the spring season in third place in the Learfield standings, Lindsey Wilson scored 373.25 points -- the most in the NAIA -- during April and May championships to claim the Directors' Cup. The Blue Raiders posted 173 points during the fall and 306.5 points in the winter championships. This spring, the Blue Raider women's tennis team scored 90 points for its second-place finish at the national championship while men's tennis ended in a tie for third to garner 83 points. Baseball scored 78 points points after a tie for fifth at the NAIA World Series last month in Lewiston, Idaho. The Lindsey Wilson softball and men's outdoor track & field finished tied for 11th in their respective national championships. Men's outdoor track & field picked up 65.25 points and softball scored 57 points. While Lindsey Wilson did not use the points for its final total, the women's outdoor track & field team scored 32 points for a 40th-place tie to cap the successful spring season. Joining women's tennis and softball as the six countable women's sports during the year are the basketball, soccer, swimming and volleyball teams. Women's soccer joined women's tennis with a national runner-up finish -- good enough for 90 points. Volleyball added 83 points for its tie for third in early December. Women's basketball produced 70 points for its tie for fifth while women's swimming earned 72 points after finishing sixth in March. On the men's side, Lindsey Wilson scored in baseball, tennis, swimming, indoor and outdoor track & field and wrestling. The Lindsey Wilson football and men's soccer teams also scored after reaching their national championships, but their points were not used in the final standings. Lindsey Wilson men's swimming garnered 66 points after posting an eighth-place finish at nationals and the wrestling team finished in 12th place to earn 64.5 points. The men's indoor track and field team earned 34 points with a 20th-place finish. The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the NACDA and USA Today.
