A lot of friends have commented privately that this is indeed a "Single Peony" and I concur. Supposedly, Single Peonies are the oldest or original Peony. The carnation-like bloom of the more common occurring "Double Peony" is what really had me perplexed.

At any rate, I learned something that, on the surface, might seem to be trivial in nature. However, "Castles of Wisdom are built with stones of knowledge" so, our "Castles" are closer to occupancy than 'twere afore. - Billy Joe Fudge>

Jack has exercised an attitude of complete entitlement with complete success
Click on headline or photo for complete story

By Celia Downey

I have this dog named Jack who is beyond pitifully spoiled.

Jack is a Jack Russell Terrier; imagine that, who was adopted at four weeks old, some years ago.

Jack is black and white and weighs about 22 pounds laden on his frame of about two hands high. Without doing the math I think his body mass index (BMI) is over the moon, making him uninsurable.

Robert Cummings: Hopes Ohio bridges progress faster than RS interchange

Robert Cumming writes:
I took a river cruise last week during the Derby Steamboat Race and checked out the progress on the new 65 northbound bridge. With just the two towers in place now and a small amount of deck on top of each, I hope that project moves faster toward the scheduled January opening than the US 127- Cumberland Parkway interchange project in Russell Springs. - ROBERT CUMMING

Carol Perkins: Another day in the life of Carol

Elements of the incident of the lost keys at Edmonton State Bank remains a mystery, Carol writes, after they were found. 'I am still puzzled. With the keys in the bottom of the trash, what made the horn go off-twice? Why could I not unlock the passenger side of my car with the switch on the side of the door? Why, when I drove away, was the theft light on? Evidently my car thought I was trying to steal it.'
Next earlier Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: Main Street Screen Printing changing hands

By Carol Perkins

I seldom go inside the Edmonton State Bank where I have done business since I was old enough to have a checking account. That would have been when I was in college. Instead, I drive through the window where the cashier knows me and also knows my account number. It didn't take her long to catch on that I would seldom have a deposit slip. Guy finds this irresponsible of me. I find it careless but not detrimental to anyone's life.

Tom Chaney: Though You Kill Me, I Must Bury My Brother

Of Writers And Their Books: Though You Kill Me, I Must Bury My Brother! Tom says, the conflict in Anouilh’s Antigone boils down to Antigone's rejecting life as utterly meaningless unless she makes the hard choices. This column first appeared 9 May 2010.

By Tom Chaney

Though You Kill Me, I Must Bury My Brother!

A car load of us motored to Columbia a few days ago to see a production of Jean Anouilh's Antigone. Though we traveled in the midst of wind and storm, I was eager to see one of my favorite plays again.

The fact that Robert Brock, director of the Kentucky Repertory Theatre, directed the play was another plus.

Happy Tail - Spanky, the red-nose pit bull

Spanky, a white pit bull, was rejected as a resident at Sugarfoot, but the owner dumped him at Sugarfoot anyway. Spanky had pit tendencies. He was very aggressive, but Peg & Keith discovered that the aggression was only aimed at other dogs. They've kept him. He's a not-available-for-adoption resident, and have learned to love him, and learn more about the breed.

By Peg Schaeffer

As I have said before I'm not a big fan of Pit Bulls so when I got a call from someone who wanted me to take their Pit Bull I told them no. The next morning when I went out to feed the horses there in the buffer zone was a white Pit Bull. She looked bewildered trying to figure out why she had been abandoned. I put a leash on her and lead her to the kennel.

In the walk up the driveway she tried to attack any dog that came in her path, even a puppy. I put her in a pen in the kennel while trying to decide what to do with her. I wouldn't take her to the shelter because of her aggressive nature. I was afraid she'd be euthanized and although I don't like the breed I didn't want to see her killed. Who knows what had happened in her life to make her this way. I named her Spanky and she became another member of our family.
