Civics classes in action: We're still teaching students to VOTE Students at ACHS held mock elections to experience democratic process first hand By Alan W. Reed, Superintenden Adair County School District Throughout our school experience we have all learned the importance of voting. As in yesteryear, students continue to learn that, in the US, we have a constitutional republic in which government consists of elected public officials who do not control us, but who represent us in a government " of the people, by the people and for the people." President Thomas Jefferson reminded us that an informed and educated electorate is a fundamental necessity for the longevity of the republic. This year as in years past, mock elections were conducted in school so that students could experience the democratic process first-hand. Students were again reminded voting is a civic duty -and that democracy's cornerstone is information and education. I am sure that educators like legendary LWC historian Miss Noma Dix Winston, or ACHS' famed Mr. John Peck inspired many of you to become knowledgeable voters. I would like to join them in remind each Adair countian to get out today and VOTE. I would also leave with you a comment of Jefferson, taken slightly out of context: "I know no safe depositary of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves." - Thomas Jefferson - ALAN W. County Clerk is checking into reports of problems with city voting We're expecting word from Clerk Rodger's office shortly on the situation. Write in candidate Ben Arnold says he's received word of problems in three of the four polling places in the city: Blair Center, Wheet Hall, and Trinity. By Ed Waggener There are reports coming in to us of some city voters not being able to vote in the city elections. The county court clerk's office confirmed that Clerk Joyce Rodgers is visiting the polls, but did not explain the full nature of the problem except to say that there appears to be "some confusion," and that Clerk Rodgers is now checking into it. On problem that was confirmed this morning was that for a short time West Columbia ran short of the paper ballots most voters prefer; and that some voters may have left the polls instead of using the machines (a slightly more complicated case). Ben Arnold, the write in candidate, said that he had received word from three of the four city voting locations - from The Blair Center, Wheet Hall, and Trinity; none from Hurt - of at least 6 voters with complaints, which he passed on to the clerk's office. Council Member Ron Rogers said that one voter - a supporter of his who is a professional man of high standing in the community - called out loud wondering where the city council ballot was on the ballot. And was told it was on the back. Rogers wondered if other city voters may not have had adequately understood, or if they had had adequate instructions. In this case it was quickly resolved. And a in the last hour or so, Chief Jason Cross rushed into the Annex building with some notes and said that he was going in to find out about problems with confusion for city voters. 2014-11-04 14:41:57 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Politics

Morrison log home (1815) is much more than a cabin Writer remembers much more about historic building at Chance, and regrets, as so many of us do, not taking time to listen to Obie Coomer's memories before Mr. Coomer went to his reward. Comments re article 70898 Morrison family cabin at Chance is one of oldest in Adair By Bobby D Morrison I am amazed that my son remembered this information. Carved on one of the big yellow popular logs, exposed when the people purchased the property removed the shiplap siding, is a carving with the date 1815, on the end of the house toward Rock Lick Creek. Mr. Obie Coomer told me about this log house being a gathering place and the big parties there and we discussed getting together for me to learn more of the information he knew about my Patterson side of the family. But unfortunately, due to my international work, it did not happen before he went to his reward. It is much more than a cabin. - Bobby D Morrison 2014-11-04 02:10:18 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local History
