Personal commentary

The article about jobs in Adair County is worthy of consideration.

However; it has a 50,000 foot view.

To drill down on providing jobs in Adair County there are many issues.

Ralph Waggener: Smartest cows on earth are right here

Columbia's winning advantage in 1950s - : ' farm work ethic and big city ways here in Columbia' writer says.

Ralph Waggener writes
To John Halsey: The smartest cows on earth are raised in the country on farms, just as young children who learned how to work on the farm are the smartest. Smart children, smart cows. Used cows for sale is only a Adair County product as far as I know. I was raised in Columbia but my neighbor Ralph Willis raised cows on his 1 1/2 acre farm here in the city as did John Lowe, who had more acres just below our house on Jamestown Street and Lindsey Wilson College had a big farm not far behind our house. So, wee had the advantage of farm work ethic and big city ways here in Columbia. Just adding a little info for you, Ralph Roy Waggener as all ways outoforder. - Ralph Waggener

Rev. Jerry Cline, 70, formerly of Adair Co., KY (1944-2014)

Rev. Cline was a retired minister who served Columbia First Church of the Nazarene for 14 years, prior to which he had been an Evangelist for 15 years. He was very active working with veterans. He is fondly remembered here by not only members of the First Nazarene Church but also for his participation in so many community activities here. Many remember his wonderful sense of humor, his performances in clown uniforms and his appearances on his unicycle in parades. His humanity shows through, along with his love of animals, in the list of his survivors, listing his cat, Coco. But most importantly, he is remembered for his dedicated Christian service as a pastor at Columbia First Church of the Nazarene and the love he held for his congregation and they for him. He returned frequently to Columbia, many times to officiate at funerals, the most recent was in Columbia in the latter part of 2013 to officate at rites for several leading Adair Countians, the latest in November 2013.

Rev. Jerry Cline, 70, of Bowling Green died at 7:18 pm Thursday, October 16, 2014 at his residence.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2pmCT, Monday, October 20, 2014 at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home, 901 Fairview Ave, Bowling Green, KY 42101, with burial in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be 2pm-8pmCT, at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home and again from 10amCt to service time on Monday at the funeral home.

Job Descriptions for elected positions requested

Charles Marshburn
How about showing the job descriptions for the positions the candidates are seeking. Position seems to be a better word than office. Charles Marshburn
Great idea, Charles Marshburn: It's a high priority agenda item. And, time permitting in the approximately 400 hours until the polls open at 6amCT, Tue 4 Nov 2014, we'll try, while trying to do our part to cover this exciting election. Voters are keen on the issues. At least one candidate's posts have generated more interest than we've ever seen in politics in the 18 year history of CM. Hope to have the posts available, soon. - EW

Tom Chaney: Papal High Jinks

Papal High Jinks. Tom says Robert Ludlum is the daddy of the quick paced thriller wherein shadowy forces conspire to do in the status quo. This column first appeared 18 October 2009.
The next earlier Tom Chaney column: Dan Brown and the screenplay as novel

By Tom Chaney

Papal High Jinks

Robert Ludlum is another of those writers who died long before I was finished wanting to read them. Upon his death at 73 he had finished 29 novels. Twice that number would not have been enough, although he left notes and ideas enough that several ghost writers have kept busy.

From Knifley: Invitation to speak on Used Cows at KU Roundtable

Jon Halsey writes:
Thanks for the clarification.

Since we now have Smart Houses, Smart Cars and all sorts of Smart Appliances, I thought that Sammy was trying to get a leg up on the competition, so I thought the correct rendering of Sammy's advert was: U.S. E(d) D.

Of course I should have known that if he wanted really smart cows, he'd send them to the KU (Knifley University - CM) Roundtable, across the county from his District, but I'm sure Squire Rogers wouldn't mind

JIM: Big news from 1914, the passing of Mr. Simcoe Dockery

Next to the Doughboy Monument, embedded in the image of any traveler may be that of a tall stele in Jamestown City Cemetery, beside, up the hill, and to the North of the beautiful Jamestown United Methodist Church. Though a vast number see it in their minds, scarcely any remember and few know the significance of the tall spire, which evokes Jamestown, the Washington Monument, in the nation's capitol, or the Jefferson Davis Monument at Fairview. Jim has researched the matter - refreshing the memory of a man who was a giant of his time, well-deserving the focal point of an incredibly beautiful cemetery. Yesterday, on a brief visit, Linda and I were amazed in the past, we'd only seen the whole image of the grounds. But as we always learn Walking Columbia a quiet reverent stroll instills an irresistable desire to see return. Our thanks to JIM for this re-discovery of the significance of he visual cue no one who appreciates the charm of Jamestown could have missed.

Poetry by Robert Stone: A life continuing

A life continuing

- a sonnet for the birthday of Renate zum Tobel, reflecting on seven gifts
A weed is but a flower out of place
and understanding recognizes worth.
A hate is but a love in wan disgrace
and fortitude may bring it to rebirth.

A star is but a fire from years ago
and knowledge reassures its present light.
A fear is but a hope that did not grow
and counsel shows a way to set aright.

A seed is but a plant not yet mature
and piety proclaims that all should live.
A pain is but a touch that cries for cure
and wisdom seeks the proper care to give.

A death is but a life continuing
and awe and wonder shape remembering.

- Robert Stone, 15 October 2014

Wanda Kerns comments: Jobs are what we need in Columbia

Wants new factory which would hire fom Adair County, first

Wanda Kerns writes:
Another gas station is the last thing we need in Columbia .We need jobs. Why hasn't any of our candidates looked into that? That would get my vote. Sure they promise they will make a change but once elected they forget they ever said that. A nice restaurant would be nice, not a burger joint, though. A factory would be wonderful. and hire from Adair County first; but I have a feeling I'm just blowing hot air. Have a Blessed Day - Wanda Kerns
