Superintendent Thanks! I want to sincerely thank all of you who turned out to support ACHS football Friday evening. I’m not very good at estimating crowd sizes but I believe the Friday night Adair-Russell football game was, so far, the most attended event ever held on our campus. It was a great win for the Indians. During the evening I kept thinking how great it was to see so many people enjoying such a wholesome event on our campus. It just couldn’t get much better - bright lights, perfect weather, a great rivalry, plenty of hotdogs and drinks, the ACHS band at half-time, and of course, the victory! Thanks to all of you who mentioned how great out campus looked. Our buildings and grounds have never looked so great thanks to a dedicated maintenance and custodial staff. Please don’t forget about the wonderful things happening academically at ACHS as well - the new Career Tech Center, and every student "College and Career Ready"! Thanks again for supporting Adair County Schools and our programs, and for celebrating the many recent successes with us. Students and employees are working harder than we ever have to make this district one of the finest in Kentucky and to make all Adair countians proud. Alan W. Happy Tail: On the road again Peg is back home after a trip to celebrate her son, Chip Rickey's birthday in Connecticut. Next earlier column: Happy Tail: Tonka, the Pony that could posted 22 Sep 2014 By Peg Schaeffer Every year in September I go to Connecticut to celebrate my son, Chip's, birthday. I told him I was there for the first one and I plan on being there for all of them. I'm a procrastinator. I always wait until the last minute but I've found I always work better under pressure. My plane was leaving on Wednesday afternoon so on Tuesday I decided it was time to start packing. First I needed to do laundry. So I grabbed the basket of clothes, threw in my checkbook so I could balance it (the computer is downstairs) and a new cartridge of printer ink, slung in on my hip with a Diet Coke in the other hand and went into the basement. I started the washer, put in the detergent and loaded the clothes. As I closed the lid and started to head to the computer it dawned on me - I never took the checkbook and ink cartridge out of the clothes basket. I found them both in the bottom of the washer soaking wet. Off to a good start. Tom Chaney: We Rob Banks Of Writers And Their Books: We Rob Banks. Tom discusses the 'true' and sad lives of Bonnie and Clyde as told in Go Down Together by Jeff Guinn. This column first appeared 27 September 2009. The next earlier Tom Chaney column: At the Dusk of Dawn By Tom Chaney We Rob Banks Those of us of a certain age remember Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the dashing 1920's desperados Bonnie and Clyde in a 1967 movie by that name. Despite the bloodshed, violence and gore, the movie was fun. We left the theatre siding with the outlaws and despising the cops who brought them ingloriously down with 150 bullets in about sixteen seconds. The reality of their two-year rampage was a bit different. Carol Perkins: Getting ready for The Pumpkin Festival Pumpkin Festival in Edmonton is a tradition which continues to grow. Next earlier column: Carol Perkins: A husband, Ted, ends up in doghouse Posted September 14, 2014 By Carol Perkins The Pumpkin Festival is approaching and plans are underway. The chamber members do an outstanding job of preparing for this event each year and it continues to grow. Since I have been in business, I try to set up a booth in the courthouse yard with the other vendors (moving and setting up merchandise is not an easy job) and spend the day seeing familiar faces as well as those I haven't seen since last year. No one attends this festival without enjoying it. A time to shop, eat, and soak in the local color-that's what it is all about. Chuck Hinman: IJMA. Hopelessly Trapped Hopelessly Trapped! Chuck says don't close the door when you go into a restroom until you check for escape routes. Next earlier Chuck Hinman column - A Self-Taught Skill By Chuck Hinman Hopelessly Trapped! In the late 1970's, the Lease Records division of the Land & Geological Department where I worked was relocated to the newly refurbished Pioneer Building. It had been the long-time home of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. It was an old building. The men's restroom at the back of the second floor was so old that instead of marble doors and stalls, it had thick, oft-painted plywood stalls and doors. One morning when I pulled one of the stall doors outward and entered, I let the door close by itself. Somehow the door was so heavy, it 'clomped' shut and in doing so, the door hardware went too far and trapped me inside the stall. Oh God, why me? I tried the door time after time and there was no way I could get out. I was hopelessly trapped!
