KY-TN Frontierland Dub sign could have been in Burkesville, KY, early 60s

Joe H Curtis writes:
This photo could have been taken in Burkesville, KY. The building it could have been on at the time was Curtis & McComas Dry Goods (owned by my family) and is now the Smith's Card Shop building. Located on the corner of Public Square and south side of Hill Street and would have been visible when coming around the square from North Main St. As bright as the paint is it must have been taken somewhere in the early 60's because in later years it became faded. - Joe H Curtis

Division 1 Board Member's resignation is immediate. State Board, State Commissioner of Education will name replacement

By Ed Waggener

A call to Superintendent Alan W. Reed about the status of the approval from Frankfort for the sweeping overall of Adair County Schools this morning revealed no new information except that the letter has been forwarded to the Kentucky Department of Education Division of Facilities and that word is expected in no more than a few days, with swift approval anticipated. Superintendent was asked about the status of Division I Adair County Board Member. He said that she had resigned and read the following statement:
"This morning I visited Ms. Rebecca Turner, Board member for Division I at her residence at 151 Bridgepointe Circle. At that time she handed her letter of resignation from the Adair County Board of Education pursuant to the following statutes: KRS 160.180, KRS 160.180(3), KRS 415.050, and KRS 415.060. The resignation is effectively immediately. Just moments ago (call at 10:49amCT, Friday, September 29, 2012 - CM) I contacted Kentucky Commissioner of Education Dr. Terry Holliday and forwarded a copy of the letter of resignation to him. A successor to Ms. Turner will be chosen by the Kentucky Department of Education and Commissioner Holliday. A public posting of procedures will be posted when I receive verification of receipt of my letter and instructions from Dr. Holliday."
Superintendent did not give a time frame for the replacement to be named, but said he expected, that the board would act as quickly as it responsibly can.

Supt. Reed outlines process for new school configuration

Bold new step will save $500,000 a year, put all students in new or renovated schools, and rids county of ignominious distinction of having the No. 1 an No. 8 worst school buildings in the state

By Alan W. Reed, Superintendent
News from Adair County School District

Good morning to all of you!

As you are well aware, the Local Planning Committee met yesterday afternoon and voted unanimously to reduce the number of schools in our district from 5 to 4. It is estimated this move will save our cash-strapped district around five-hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) per year. In addition, this bold move by the LPC and Board of Education, puts all of our students in new or rebuilt schools and closes two buildings currently designated by the state as the number 1 and number 8 worst facilities in the Commonwealth - John Adair Intermediate and Colonel William Casey Elementary School.

Comments re article 54768 A monumental moment in history of Adair County Schools Jon Halsey writes:
As presented it appears to be a laudable plan and I applaud those involved. It is refreshing to see planning that reallocates the assets we already have and considers re-allocation to better meet the community's current needs rather than looking for the State or Feds to give us more. - Jon Halsey, Knifley, KY

PSC opens case to see whether to overlay or split area code 270

In 2007, the PSC split area code 270 on a north-south line Cities designated to remain in area code 270 included Bowling Green, Columbia, Glasgow, Elizabethtown and Owensboro. Area code 364 was to cover the western portion of the current area code 270, including the cities of Henderson, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Murray and Paducah. That plan was not implemented. And there is no assurance that another split would follow the same dividing line.

By Andrew Melnykovych
News from Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC)

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has opened a proceeding that will lead to the creation of a new area code in all or a portion of the current area code 270, which covers western Kentucky. In an order issued in late August, the PSC said that it had been notified by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) that area code 270 is projected to run out of available numbers by the third quarter of 2014. NANPA, which oversees the distribution of phone numbers and assigns area codes, subsequently revised that forecast to project number exhaustion by the first quarter of 2014.

The Dance on Trinity Hill: The social event of the season

It was at the very least one of the top social events of the year in Adair County, held Friday, September 21, 2012, at the Trinity UMC Fellowship Hall. It was by far one of the most heart warming events. And it was big - at least 50 special guests and that many more adults and guardians. In all, 118 signed the register. For the primary organizer, the writer, it was the most fulfilling thing she ever did. It was a dance for her sister and other Special Needs Adults and Children. A joyous dance, sometimes watched by the guardians with smiles and laughter, and often, with tears of joy, watching the happiness on the face of a little blind girl, dancing with the confidence of a prom queen.
It took a village to carry this out. There's a long list of credits to people who, in the Adair County Way, pitched in not expecting any notice for themselves. But their caring contributions can't be overlooked.

By Anita Stotts Clark
A special story about special people, special to CM Readers

I decided to have this dance because after mom died in 1997 and I became my sister, Becky's guardian her life expanded to include so many young adults. These girls were often going to the prom or other dances. Becky always wanted to go. She has asked for years. I decided if the only way for her to go to a dance was if I had one I would.
