Jury recommends 31 year sentence for man for trying to kill wife Final sentencing in Meade Co., KY case scheduled for October 25, 2012 By MTRP Norman Chaffins, Public Affairs Officer Kentucky State Police Post 4, Elizabethtown, KY Brandenburg, KY - On Thursday, September 27, 2012 a Meade County jury recommended a 31-year sentence for 41-year-old Alan D. Bruner of Brandenburg, KY. The jury deliberated for approximately 40 minutes before finding him guilty of Arson 1st Degree, Attempted Murder of his wife, Holly Bruner, and Fraudulent Insurance Acts over $500. On February 12, 2011 Alan Bruner introduced Ambien into his wife's system by mixing the drug into her pancakes. After his wife was incapacitated, his took his two small children, ages 3 and 3 weeks, and loaded them into a car. He returned to the residence and ignited 3 separate fires in the home while his wife slept. He then left with his children while his residence burned. The fire was discovered by a neighbor when the garage door was shorted out by the fire. The fire department entered the residence and rescued Holly Bruner. She was transported and treated for smoke inhalation at Hardin Memorial Hospital. Alan Bruner was seen leaving the residence approximately 4 minutes prior to the fire being discovered. The Meade County Fire Department and the Muldraugh Fire Department responded to the scene. The jury recommended a sentence of 20 years on the Arson 1st, 10 years on the Attempted Murder and 1 year on the Fraudulent Insurance Acts, all to run consecutive for a total of 31 years. Final sentencing is scheduled for October 25, 2012. KSP Arson Detective Terry Scott investigated and was assisted by Chris Crawford of the State Fire Marshal's Office and retired Post 4 Detective Eugene Maxwell.
