$106 at Flatwoods for Mary's House in first hours

2012-08-04 - 6970 Burkesville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo Flatwoods Diner photo.
Just a few hours after the Mary's House Donation Jar was set out at The Flatwoods Dinner, customers had donated $106 toward the remaining $6,707 needed to complete the $40,000 goal to get a new house for Mary McGuffin and her seven children. Above, Fran Neat accepts the money from Matt Baker, who thought it the idea would be a good way for people to donate twenties to see the project to completion. The donation jar will remain at the diner for a few days. "I hope doing our part will help get the work underway by mid-week," Mr. Baker said, and with a challenge to other coffee clubs around the county to see what they can raise.

Reader says Popcorn King has to be Rodney L. Thompson, Sr.

To the editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com:
Even though I am not acquanted with Jerry Marshall, I stand tall and feel I was the "Popcorn King" of Adair County, at least in the 50"s. While Robert Flowers and Jerry Marshall stand tall in this catagory, they were after me. How can I not be the "Popcorn King" when the popcorn I sold, or gave away, brought me a new 1958 Ford. - Rodney L Thompson, Sr

Mary's House: Mini update - $106 more added Saturday morning

Mary's House: Total Saturday, August 4, 2012, climbs to $33,399. by mid-day
A number of churches plan special offerings Sunday, August 5, 2012.

Thanks to an innovative idea from Matt Baker at the Flatwoods Diner, 6970 Burkesville Road, Columbia, KY, $106 was added to the Mary's House fund in just 4 hours this morning! Mr. Baker started a donations jar at the store, to make it easier for his customers to help our cause. He asked us to take what had been raised this morning, just to let everyone know that more people are helping us meet our goal. The donations jar will be available until we are at $40,000, he said.

We haven't heard if any other stores in the county have accepted his challenge to follow suit, but wouldn't it be great if contributions were to be matched to cut days off the time needed to get the project underway.Latest numbers for Mary's House as of Saturday, August 4, at 12pmCT:
  • Goal is $40,000
  • $106 posted to total August 4, 2012
  • Needed now - $6,601
We're almost sure of other donations today. And we do know of three or four large congregations which plan special offerings on Sunday, August 5, 2012 to help us meet the goal.

Here's how you can help

Straight talk from Jerry Marshall: Setting the records straight

How it really was. The last word: Wherein Jerry Marshall addresses and clearifies most of the major issues facing ColumbiaMagazine readers at this point in time, August 4, 2012: 1) The Odd Couple issue which has polarized - split right down the middle - our readership; with Bro. Dave Rosenbaum making up one half of our readers, everybody else the other half, and the third half still bewildered until Lewis Williams speaks. 2) The Real Record Holder in the Popcorn Business - and it's not Robert Flowers (NOR Rodney Thompson for that matter). And The pivotal role Vernon and Bobby Bowe played in turning the writer's life around - in this tell all miniography of Life of Marshall, by Jerry Marshall. AND more. -CM
Comments re photo 46164 Favorite Old Poster Columbian Theatre Calendar 1969

By Jerry Marshall

That was the Odd Couple movie, which came out in 1968. New release movies were not made available to small town theatres at that time. That is why we didn't get it til 1969.

Also, for the record, I spent many an hour at the Columbian as well. I would challenge that I popped more popcorn than Robert Flowers ever did.

I was trained by Vernon and Bobby Bowe to run the projectors behind my Daddy's back in hopes of surprising him with my new talent some day.

And that day did arrive when One of the projectionists was ill - on a Sunday - and I stepped in. Dad only had to help me once during the film.

While Mikki was trained to sell tickets, I was trained to pop and sell popcorn, run the ice cream bar, take up tickets (not much to that one) and because of some misguided judgment at school school, spent time developing my cleaning skills.

Just wanted to set the record straight, Ed.

- Jerry Marshall

Thanks! Jerry Marshall: There is no greater pleasure for an humble internet editor than to have an issue posed, an issue discussed with civil discourse, and issue laid to rest authoritatively as you have done. When Dean Quinn steered up a hornet's nest - inadvertently; he is not a known troublemaker. It's a relief to get all the answers in one neat, concise but comprehensive clarification, as you have done so magnificently. So that settles that. -ED

Mary's House: God's amazing grace is at work in our community

Total now at $33,393.00 !!!
At 12:05pmCT, Friday, August 3, 2012, Fran Neat reports that an as yet anonymous donor has just given Debbie White a $300 check for Mary's House.
  • Goal - by August 1, 2012 - $40,000.00
  • Total - received through August 3, 2012 -$33,393.00
  • Added today - $1,300 posted to total August 3, 2012
  • Still Needed - to started on construction - $6,707.
Think about it: if just 336 people match the generosity of my parent's extra cash several decades ago and just give $20 it would add up to enough to put us over the top! We'd really see God's amazing grace in action. - Fran

By Fran Neat

God's amazing grace is at work in our community. You have told me over and over how much you desire to help Mary's family, and you are!

We all can recall when times were hard. I remember once when my husband, Don, and I were attending Campbellsville College and living at 104 Floyd Street in Campbellsville. Money was very slim to say the least. I can clearly remember and now can just see my parents, "Blue" and Ina Humphress, coming through the backdoor carrying a bag of groceries, a carton of drinks, and handing us a $20 bill (which was a lot of money in 1970.)

It is because of these experiences that we can identify with the needs of others. Right here, right now, we are to be the hands and feet of Jesus and extend agape love to Mary and her children. May each of you be truly blessed in your giving. - FRAN NEAT.

The Odd Couple: According to the internet

Dean Quinn writes:
Ed, According to the internet, The Odd Couple movie came out in 1968. Maybe it took a year or two to get to Columbia. Dean --Dean Quinn
Dean, thanks. You are probably right. And the internet may be right. But we are waiting to hear what the ultimate movie authority in Adair County, Lewis Williams says. This Rosenbaum will be a very stubborn man to convince. He doesn't stray from his his principles, and it looks like he's dug in his heels. I fear it will take pastoral influence to change his mind, not sure but that facts wouldn't just prove confusing for him. - ED

Epicurean Kentuckian: Farmers Market provides entire supper

No picture, but imagine an Adair County supper with colors more vivid than the prettiest Thai dish, with the main entree Purple Hull peas, and you have the enviable repast of the proudest gentry in beautiful Joppa, KY. Pipe in the Columbia Baptist Church evening chimes and the old Hasenour's on Barrett Avenue with Kurt Seigert and the Strolling Strings couldn't have provided a more royal dinner.

MElewi writes:
For supper tonight, Friday, August 3, I had purple hull peas, okra, tomato and onion salad, the prettiest lavender colored mash potatoes made from purple potatoes and lemon bread for dessert. All from the Adair County Farmers Market. Thanks to all our local farmers for your great produce. melewi --MElewi

BJF: No one here has to shoulder the load alone

By Billy Joe Fudge

What an amazing act of Christian love the folks of Cane Valley Christian Church are exemplifying with Mary's House.

The folks of Adair County and South Central Kentucky never cease to astonish me with their collective and individual commitment to helping those in need.

I think Adair County's motto should be, "No one here has to shoulder the load alone". - Billy Joe Fudge
