Dave Rosenbaum levels charge of tolerable mistake in CM reporting

Comments re photo 46164 Favorite Old Poster Columbian Theatre Calendar 1969 writes:
Well, it's not often that I find CM to contain error but today you have made a tolerable mistake. The Columbian Theatre Calendar is a misprint. It is represented that this calendar is from 1969. That is impossible since one of the movies showing was The Odd Couple with Jack Lemon and Walter Mathau. I distinctly recall that The Odd Couple debuted in the early 80's at the very earliest. I recall it as if it were yesterday! It just couldn't have been 1969! That would make it 43 years ago - impossible. - Dave Rosenbaum
Serious stuff, Bro. Dave: You've surely committed something by indirectly challenging so much we hold sacred:

George Bailey and the Howard Theater of Crab Orchard, KY

Comments re article 53031 Howard Theater Crab Orchard KY has storied past

By George Bailey Jr

My father started the theater in Crab Orchard after The War.

My father did show movies all around in several counties after he sold out. He knew TV was a new media so he really got out early. Maybe too early.

He had movie shows in Bandy, Bee Lick , Buck Creek and as far away as Yosemite.

This was a good parttime business. This venture was over in the late 50's and he started selling TVs for a living. He passed away in 2005. He raised six girls and one son. He was a man of his word and loved to meet people. --George Bailey Jr

News from Mary's House project

It's not over till it's over! God is working through this project! The August 1 goal was set with high expectations, and we almost made it in time! From July 20 to July 29, you donated over $10,000. Our local churches have boosted our efforts tremendously and are still sending sizeable donations. The Mary's House Committee wishes to thank each and every one of you so much for taking our project to heart and responding so quickly and with such Christian love.

The response from the community and the readership of ColumbiaMagazine.com has been absolutely amazing. Hats off to everyone. Where would we be now without CM readers' help and our faith in the good Lord! Thank you, Ed.

To those of you who are still interested in giving, please do so. The building project will not begin until we have reached and banked the entire $40,000. We are still short approximately $8,000. Extra money received will be deposited and kept for future building expenses; and, if not needed in that area, can definitely be applied towards the purchase of appliances and/or furniture.

The building of Mary's House is going to happen. It is not too late to come "on board" to help this beautiful family. If 400 people gave $20, our goal would be met. - Fran

News from Adair County High School Boys Golf

On Thursday morning August 2, 2012 the ACHS Boy's made a successful start to their 2012 Season.

The tribe traveled to Kentucky Hills Golf Course to take on Metcalfe Co., Monroe Co., and Warren East in their first match play of the season. The Indians posted a team score of 147 to best Metcalfe's 157, Warren East's 161, and Monroe Co.'s 167.

Coach's Comments - We played extremely well today. Anytime you can place 4 golfers in the 30's you are going to be hard to beat. Alex's ball striking was outstanding. Alex proved today why he is considered to be one of the best golfers in the state by many. Riley, Daniel, and Trey also played great. The season is just getting started but it is great to come out of the gates playing the way we have. - Coach Steve Burton

2012 a great year for tomatoes, but beans are in short supply

But recent rains have propped up crops, and the season is looking better
(This article is proof of the Farm Wisdom which Billy Neat, senior agricultural advisor to The Farmers Pride, Kentucky's No. 1 agriculture journal, published right here in Columbia, KY, passed out - for free -at the Flatwoods Diner: The old timers said that a dry June meant a good crop year; that plants put down deeper roots in search of moisture. Then when the July rains came, the crops would be excellent. -CM)

By Barbara Armitage
News from the Adair Farmers Market

Between this summer's blistering record breaking heat and weeks without so much as a drop of rain most vegetable gardens are in a sad state right now.

The dedicated farmers of the Adair County Farmer's Market have planted, weeded, watered and in my case even sang to our gardens in hope of coaxing a decent crop of veggies from our farms for you this summer.

While we all have tomatoes aplenty, other vegetables are in short supply. Corn is at the top of most customers want list. Okra is another veggie that we haven't seen much of at the market lately. I think that everyone will agree that the hardest vegetable to find this summer is the lowly Green Bean. It doesn't matter if you prefer the old favorites like Blue Lake or the Half-runner, newer varieties like Tenderette or the flat style beans like the Romas they are all hard to find.

Hope is on the horizon, recent rains have helped to prop up the crops already in the ground and there's still time for us to plant another crop of Green Beans before the winter frost gets to them.

If Green Beans are on your shopping list my hint for you is to get down to the Farmer's Market early. I don't expect the beans I picked this afternoon to last very long. - Barbara Armitage
