Agrees with: A Great Idea for Westlake by Ralph R. Waggener

Says hospital should provide care for everybody, with payment from each according to what they can pay

By Billy Joe Fudge
Personal commentary

That's right Ralph. We the people need to buy the hospital, hire an adminstrator, develop a plan, forget about medicare and medicaid, accept and provide medical care to every person who walks in the door, and demand payment from every person who receives treatment according to what they can pay (be it $5,000 a month, $500 per month or $5 per month).

Since all the Doctors, medical facilities, and hospital facilities say they are losing money on medicare patients anyway, this would get them into black ink immediately. - Billly Joe Fudge

A baptizing service was held at Sulphur Creek Rd., Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 12pm noon CT, by the Millerfield Brethren in Christ Church. Three young people were baptized into Christ, Brandon Garland, Toby Green and Trista Willis. Praise the Lord!

The service was conducted by Rev. Richard Lehman of Millerfield Brethren in Christ along with Bro. Willard Bryant.

The event, with almost 50 people in attendance, many with a "balcony" view from above along the rail of the bridge, others gathering closer up on the creekbank, brought back many thoughts of how things used to be - like a stroll down memory lane. - Fran Neat

Agrees with Ralph Waggener: Great Idea for Westlake hospital

Jon Halsey writes:
SUPER Idea, Ralph.

In reality how long would it be before the "regulators" from Big Brother and the Nanny State come thundering in and padlock the whole building and ruin everyone even remotely involved with litigation?

We DO have the power to change that outcome, unfortunately it requires an educated public to spend 15 minutes to get to the polls and vote!

History indicates that this likelihood is as about as far-fetched as your pipe dream. I do ,however, like the way you think and yes - it's a great idea. - Jon Halsey, Knifley, KY

Letter: CMS will be paying hospitals on a Value-Based formula

It's similar to what was outlined in article by Ralph Roy Waggener, writer says
Cheryl Wall writes:
Ralph is actually pretty close to describing what is called Value-Based Purchasing. Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services, otherwise known as CMS, will soon be paying each and every hospital based on the quality of care instead of the quantity of services that a patient receives during treatment. CMS is restructuring the payment system based on "quality of care." This information is available on CMS website or you can Google "value-based purchasing." Payments from CMS will be based 70% on quality of care and 30% on HCAPHS, which are patient satisfaction surveys.Try CMS website or google "Value-Based Purchasing" to read more. - Cheryl Wall

Proposes three to replace present hospital board

Now we know what we do not want to happen again, she says

Sheila Wood writes:
I think You (Ralph Roy Waggener), Joe Hare and Vicky Pike should be on the hospital board. The three of you seem to have such a common sense style of thinking about the local hospital. Something has to give and I do not think the taxpaying citizens of Columbia should have to foot the whole bill. I do believe we should help the hospital, but keep in mind we knew the hospital was having issues way before this came to light. So now there is a big red flag of what we do not want to happen again. Just my thoughts on the matter. - Sheila Wood

Impartial review: Paul's Fruit Mkt. tomatoes no match for A.L.'s

Writer and Food critic Debbie Sinclair, without bias, says it must be the water in Adair County which helps her father, A.L. Sinclair, grow the best tomatoes in the world. Not even celebrated Paul's Fruit Market produce can come near, she says.
Debbie Sinclair wrote MEMORIES of STREEVAL FIELD: The day Momma didn't throw Kenny from the plane, and other stories found by entering her name in the search box at CM

By Debbie Sinclair

Adair Co. and my father have once again come through with the Worlds Best tomatoes. Have made 2 trips to Columbia for the main purpous of getting my fix of the joyful fruit.

Also came to see the family, but left with a truck load of green beans, tomatoes cucumbers, squash and pear preserves.

Usually have to go to Paul's Fruit Market here in Louisville, but they can't even begin to compare. I now am nervously awaiting my next run for tomatoes, courtesy of my sister, this coming week. Must be the water there so keep 'em coming and hi to all down home. --Debbie Sinclair

What a great idea!: WRH, the best value hospital in the nation?

A lot of What If's - including What if it strived to give good service without bankrupting families when a member had to use the emergency room? . . . I know this just a pipe dream of mine, but ain't it a good one? Ralph Waggener asks.
Or is it really just a pipe dream? If the leadership of the community mans up, faces reality, fires those who are failing so miserably, and takes the necessary action to save Westlake - for the community? -EW

By Ralph Roy Waggener
Commentary from the editor of It's Just for A Smile News

After writing about Westlake Regional Hospital it got me to thinking.

What if Westlake were not bought by a big regional money making hospital and just became the Walmart of medical care by being the best value hospital in the nation?

Kentucky Color - Trumpet Vine Feast

Click on headline for Kentucky Color w/photo(s)

By Billy Joe Fudge

Trumpet Vine is well known in many circles as Hummingbird Vine. That name is well deserved for it seems to bloom much of the summer and provide nectar for hummingbirds which visit its bright, orange flowers hour after hour, day after day.

However, the fruit sweats a sweetish, saltish concoction which flies and bees of all sorts are continually harvesting. Each individual is fighting for space and sometimes the fight turns deadly when smaller Sweat Bees become part of the harvest, as evidenced in the photo, to wind up in the wasps nest for sustenance for their babies in the larvae stage. - Billy Joe Fudge

Poetry by Robert Stone: A blaze of glory

A blaze of glory
- a sonnet reflecting on The Miss Firecracker Contest by Beth Henley
A lack of talent one sees not in self
when grudging necessaries sum up care
for even wonders on a common shelf
are lost among the daily tear and wear.

Enough of beauty one believes the whole
when saltine crackers substitute for cake
for sweetest teasers bullying the soul
are blind to crimes of heartless pain and ache.

Too much of focus one allows the fire
when single threads outshine the patterned quilt
for loves unsatisfied with sore desire
are ignorant of paths to shame and guilt.

When not ahead, one cannot quit at last
a crimson blaze of glory leaving past.

Chuck Hinman - IJMA 100-B: Aging Gracefully

Told his body parts were 85 years old and to get used to it was tough to take, but the author came up with the most admirable course one can take, a realistic and valiant one: Pondering the realistic state of my life in view of this string of bad news I got some sense from somewhere that with God's help I would 'make do' with what I have left.

Carol Perkins: Yard Sales

It started small, but has grown to what may be the biggest of all indoor Yard Sales. So big, in fact, that it's a temporary store, which will be open weekends until Labor Day!
The last Carol Perkins column: Carol Perkins: A Golfing Tale

By Carol Perkins

Whose bright idea was it to have a yard sale?

Was it mine?

I vowed NEVER to have another yard sale as long as I lived. Why? Becausegetting ready for it is just too much work. Hours of dragging outclothes from storage boxes, backs of closets, plastic tubs, and leafbags tucked away in the attic or basement is back-breaking, butpricing is no picnic either. With four people involved, every itemrequires a sticker or a tag.

Thanks, Leisha Fair Good question. Just from memory, I think they just need significant repairs. Maybe heroes like them will appear again and they keep time as they did for most of the lives of many of us. - EW
