Letter: Breastfeeding can reduce diabetes

By Janet Novielli
This is only somewhat related but it concerns me that with such high rates of diabetes in this area there is not more emphasis on mothers breastfeeding their babies which can decrease the incidence of Type one diabetes in the child....and recently on a medical segment on Sundays it was stated that IF a mother nurses her baby for 1-2 months it can reduce the mother's risk of diabetes by 50%. Seems to me this would be a wise idea for both mother and child! - Janet Novielli

Kids Need Kicks: Just $30 buys a pair of shoes

Mindy Smith of Kids Need Kicks said this morning that the biggest need at this point is for money donations. "The committee shops for each kid for whom a request has been made," she said. "And they are usually able to find a really good pair of quality shoes for $30." A $30 gift, in other words, means another kid will have a pair of shoes they can be proud to wear on opening day of school."

For those who can give more than $30, that gift would be a great help. Any amount is appreciated.

For those who would like to give enough to buy 10 pairs of socks - also badly needed, a gift of $10 will do that. "We give a new pair of socks to every child to keep before they try on the new shoes," Mindy Smith said. "New Socks also put put smiles on kids faces," she said.

Here's how you can help put smiles on faces:

Kids Need Kicks - new shoes for students -needs late Kickstart!

But the good news is that there is still time to help, in time for the start of school!

By Mindy Smith

This year's requests for have totaled 196.

Donations have been down considerably this year. We always give the kids a fresh pair of socks as they are trying on their shoes, which of course, they get to keep. We are running low on funds and thus far have not been able to purchase 196 pairs of shocks. We have a few requests for very hard to find sizes, and we are working to obtain those shoes.

Any donations of money, socks, or shoes would be greatly appreciated, and they could be dropped off at the Main Bank location of First & Farmers, or at the Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, by noon on Monday, July 30, 2012.The appreciation of the kids and their families when they receive their new shoes makes it worth the while!!!!

Have a wonderful day!

- Mindy L. Smith

Telephone Numbers for Vicky Pike - Hospital Tax Recall organizer

Because of the volume of interest in Vicky Pike's Hospital Tax Recall Petition, we are unable to forward or relay information to her. But those interested in being on the five person committee needed to form a legal entity to organize the petition can contact her by phone. She writes, "For anyone interested in serving with me on this committee, please call me at 270-384-3348 or cell 634-2604. Also let me know if anyone else has started on a committee," she wrote.

We'll continue to post, as we can, letters which meet civil discourse standards of the community, pro and con. The Tax Recall effort is just part of the need now for the community to know what has happened, not only in the Spectrum era and the tenure of the current board of trustees, but in the the previous administration and with previous boards of trustees, to the finances of the hospital, not so much to place blame or punish any of the groups, but to find a way forward, to learn what mistakes were made, and know how to avoid them in the future. - EW
