Congratulates Danielle, on making Dean's List

Doug McCammish writes:
Congratulations to all these Adair County folks who are serious about education and who are setting an example by their hard work.I want to "pick on" one especially - a rising junior at Lindsey and a mother of two high school graduates (one of whom is going to the "other nearby place") and a full time employee of Morgan Smith Industries. She decided to go back to school two years ago and was scared that she would not be able to make the grade.Math was supposed to be a particular problem. Here she is on the Dean's List every semester!Way to go Danielle! I won't embarrass her by using her last name, but you can probably figure it out. -Doug McCammish

Immediate action needed on flags

Comments re article 52812 Flags needing attention Mayor Harris has plan TBA

By Doug Beard

I, along with other citizens of Columbia and Adair County, appreciate the display of our nation's flag throughout our community.

When I arrived home for the weekend, I was shocked by the display of our nation's colors in tattered and pole wrapped conditions.

Jan Leah Berry Shaw Hindman, Green Co., KY (1961-2012)

She was a native of Green County, KY. She had the most beautiful infectious laugh of anyone. She was always smiling regardless of the kind of day she was having. She was the best neighbor, never selfish, always thinking of others, especially the people she loved most and putting their needs ahead of her own. Many of her favorite memories were of Dale Hollow Lake at Sunset Marina spending lazy summer days boating, skiing and swimming. She also loved to cook, and was an avid Alabama Football and U.K. Basketball fan. Her love for the Lord was evident by what she was always doing for others.

Maury comes up with Buyer Prices First Yard Sale idea

Comments re article 52816 Ad Heres a new twist Yard sale giver will negotiate

Maury E Lewis writes:
This is funny that this has come out. I was talking to someone this week about having a yard sale but not pricing anything and let people tell me what they will pay.

I price things at really low prices and still people come up and ask if I will take less so why should I take the time to price just let them name a price.

I would have the right to say no to a price.

What do think yard sale people? Would that work? melewi --Maury E Lewis
Thanks Melewi. Your idea is now run up the flag pole. Now if people will just salute. Maybe you can patent the idea. - EW

A tribute to Greatest News Photographer: Jimmy Cravens

My mentor

By Larry Smith
Couldn't pass up the chance to let everyone know how I happened to be in the right place at the right time for photos. I owe most of what I know about news photography to a legend in Kentucky Journalism and a man whose work I've followed for a long time: Jimmy Cravens.

For my money, he was the best news photographer of the 20th century. And he's the inspiration for so much of my work. I know I am just one of a huge fan base he amassed with the legendary Central Kentucky News.

He made everyone in Taylor, Adair and Green Counties aware of the impact of news photos. Couldn't pass up a chance to let him know how much I appreciate the trailblazing work he did. I would bet I'm not the only news photographer who had Jimmy Cravens as a mentor; scanning his body of work today is the best photo/journalism class of any I know. - Larry Smith, FM 92.76, the WAVE

Flags needing attention - (Mayor Harris has plan TBA)

Walter R Murley writes:
Ed, Have you noticed the flags on the utility poles lately? Several are torn and wrapped on the poles. I would hope they get some attention soon. Thanks. - Walter R Murley
Walter R. Murley: Thanks. The situation has not escaped the attention of Mayor Mark D. Harris. He is expected to make an announcement within the next day or so about an invitation for citizen participation in maintaining the flags. The flags are expensive, but with more public involvement and support, they can be both an attraction to the town and and still be displayed, always, according to the highest standards. The idea of citizen sponsorship for the flags, Mayor Harris said, came from public spirited citizens - he'll need to release the names, should they be made public. We expect an announcement soon. - EW
