Bear spotted by Steven Wilson and Sue and Sarah By Steven Wilson (2 seconds ago near Breeding.) Just saw the first live bear i ever saw in my life, other than at the Louisville Zoo. He/she was at the edge of the woods across from Dean Hayes' home. It may be Randy and Sandy Curry's field. Any way, I stopped the truck. Me and Sue and Sarah sat there and watched it a little while. All at once it stood up and went back in the woods. Maybe i will retire from squirrel hunting!!!After it left I happened to think and I asked my daughter, Sarah if we could have gotten a picture on her phone. Sorry. For anyone who doesn't know, this is just on the outskirts of the Flatwoods community. --Steven Wilson 2012-06-10 20:18:01 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Blue Ribbon Bear Board

Comments re: Why do governments reinforce, reward bad behavior? Civilized courtesy of Cumberland County driver takes Adair Countian, used to crude behavior at home, by surprise. He wonders why Columbia can't make a reasonable effort to remove this blemish from the fabric of our nature. By Billy Joe Fudge I was in Burkesville recently and in an attempt to cross the downtown traffic to the Old Courthouse I stopped to let a car pass as I would in Columbia. I almost lost my breath when the car came to a complete stop and the driver- who looked very offended that I had implied by my stopping that she was not a law abiding citizen - vigorously motioned for me to continue my pedestrian journey. There is so much about us as a community and a people that is so very, very positive and good and I can't for the life of me figure why we won't take every reasonable effort to remove this blemish from the fabric of our nature. - Billy Joe Fudge- Comments re article 52472: Why do governments reinforce bad behavior 2012-06-10 11:49:11 | Comments | Printable version

She is going to be missed. Thank you again. Tonya {Riddle} FranklinThank you, Tonya Franklin: The Riddle family has contributed so much to the Adair County community, one has to think to remember that they are not natives - but we know Burkesville and Cumberland County feel the same pride, and they will always be a part of that community, too. Lone Automobile in Town Watchman owned by town watchman Comments re photo 45540 Scenic Adair Co KY The town watchmanLarry Walker writes: Ed, When I first saw the caption to the picture I thought it was in reference to the owner of the lone automobile in the picture, Columbia "watchman" & city councilman Charles Grimsley!! - Larry WalkerIt should have been as you said. I wish I had thought of that. Charles Grimsley is a hero of ours because he lives where he makes his living - with watches - and does watch the town. So many in charge of things think Columbia is a great place to make a living, but they wouldn't want to live here. If they did as Charles does, what is wrong would be quickly made right. Thanks for bringing up that point. Wish I had thought of it. -EW 2012-06-10 08:55:54 | Comments | Printable version
Why do governments re-inforce, reward bad behavior? Does anybody have the answer to the inanities of government spending - from top to bottom - which rewards bad driving? A personal comment: I'd like to be able to walk three blocks to the Square without fear of being hit by a speeding car. And I'm still waiting to have one night of sleep without unnecessary and illegal noise awakening me in the night. Why? (I only disagree with any notion of fines being a source of revenue in the commentary which follows. That should never even be allowed. It's corrupting from top to bottom). - EW Comments re photo 45540 Scenic Adair Co KY The town watchman By Fay McKinley Why are we allowing the speeders within the city limits? The next earlier Tom Chaney column :Tom Chaney. R765 review: Mississippi storytelling By Tom Chaney The Coming of Rain Twenty some years ago when my niece Elizabeth Matera was casting about for a college, she flew to Philadelphia. From there we boarded the cars to New York and Boston. Near the latter city was a college of some repute -- Harvard. That school met all of her requirements, chiefly that it be above the snow line. We happened to arrive just after letters of acceptance had been mailed. The admissions office hustled us off to join a tour whilst they arranged a lunch for us. At the lunch Elizabeth met with a delightful admissions counselor, also a faculty member, Richard Marius. Professor Marius ran the undergraduate expository writing program required of all undergraduates. Early in the conversation he asked just where we were from. When I replied, "Horse Cave, Kentucky" ready to explain in detail just where that was, Marius said, "I know Horse Cave!"
