Favorite Old Photo: Corner Drug/Old Winfrey Hotel Building

2012-05-14 - Photo from collection of Mike Watson.
Oldest Building on the Public Squre and more: This photo is not old, at least by my standards--being post World War II. It appears to be a photographers proof and may have been taken by either Joseph Allison or Connell Morrison. Taken from the side yard of the Courthouse, from the Greensburg end, the photo is of the building most older Adair Countians remember fondly as Collins' Corner Drug, which is the oldest building on the Public Square and was for a very long time known simply as the Winfrey Hotel building--where the cholera epidemic took hold in 1873. Notice, to the right of the drug store, is Marshall's Variety Store, then the Kroger. To the left, and down Campbellsville Street, there were still trees on the Myers' house lot where the Municipal Building was constructed in the 1960s. - Mike Watson

US Post Office, Columbia, KY 42728 collects 4,000 lbs of food

The following letter was received following a request for information about this year's Food Drive by one of our favorite organizations, the Columbia Post Office. Turns out, the information had been sent to us, and somehow, we overlooked it. The Food Drive was a big success, anyway, we're happy to say. And, we're going to do better next year and hope that maybe CM's added help could nudge the total a little bit higher. -EW

Randal Murrell, Columbia, KY 42728 Postmaster, writes:
We just completed our Food Drive on Saturday, May 12. I did submit a notice about it to Columbia Magazine on Tuesday but I didn't get to follow up. I don't know what happened. You did a great job promoting our event last year and we appreciate that. I wish I could have got something on there this year, it really helps to remind everyone to contribute.

We had a successful day and were able to collect about 4,000 lb. of food which will all go to the local food bank and help those in need locally. Planning to do this again next year. Always the second Saturday in May. I will try to do a better job of getting the message to you next year. I enjoy the Magazine and think you all do a great service for our community. Thanks - Randal Murrell, Postmaster, Columbia KY 42728-9998
CM Postscript - Thanks so much to all those who help us with reminders. Even really big events, such as this one, sometimes fail to make the news because of an oversight. Thanks to everyone who helps us in the department. And especially, thanks to Mr. Murrell for remembering to send the news and for being so kind when it was not used. -EW

Birthday Coincidence: Three in same family share birthday today

Update to story: We've added at least two major names to the birthday list this morning. Just a reminder that if you checked earlier, a re-check may be in order.

Denise Adamson reminded us that Bradley Adamson, his wife Ashley Adamson, and her mother Sylvia Grant all share the same birthday, today, May 14, 2012.

That's quite a coincidence. The birthdays are posted on the front page of CM today, along with a very distinctive list of other noteworthy folks who are having birthdays, along with one anniversary. This is the season for anniversaries, and there's one important anniversary today.

Even if you can't send those celebrating birthday and anniversaries a new car or even a bicycle or an iPad to help them carry a world class library around with them and keep up with the news easily, everywhere, we hope you'll at least send a card, flowers, or chocolates, tell them Happy Birthday, take them to dinner, and let them know you know they are special today. And if anyone is so special that Happy Birthday is personally sung to them by Judge Walker, let us know. That's big news - like getting written up by Byron Crawford, back when Louisville had a real Kentucky newspaper.

If we missed any important birthdays in Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Taylor Counties for today - let us know. (Contact/Submit). We'll do our best to work it into what today's Events looks like a very busy day - besides being the last day of school. -EW
