Brad Conover, his enthusiasm for history, will be sorely missed

"A library burned down with his departure." - MIKE WATSON

By Mike Watson

Brad Conover will be sorely missed in Columbia and Adair County in many waysand by many people, not the least of all by those of us who respected andappreciated his enthusiasm for the history of his native place. Iremember both his father and mother very well and Mr. Conover told memany, many tales of yesteryear. How I wish I had recorded them!

It grieves me when someone with Brad's knowledge passes on, and in away that some may feel strange. I know that a library burned down withhis departure. There is no way to prevent this loss of personalhistory other than having it written or recorded by that individual.

And, like so many of us, perhaps all of us, what we know, and feelothers ought to know, remains with us. Little bits of data which wethink no one else really needs or wants to know may be a vital clue inthe not-so-distant future to another.Dr. Thomas Clark once said, "A good housekeeper is an historians worstnightmare." and that is so true! - Mike Watson

According to Noel Harvey, elder statesman and retired gentleman store owner at Breeding Kentucky, Elroy is located in the little piece of bottomland at the intersection of Old Highway 61 and Harrods Fork Creek.

When the community was a bustling center of trade in the late 1800's with it's own school and post office none of the area's residents could have ever imagined that the community would have disappeared and then would be rediscovered between two bridges over Harrods Fork Creek.
