Metcalfe Co. HS tennis players advance to state Hayden Crain and Jackson Bell defeated a talented Glasgow team. The girls tennis team will play in sectional play at Henderson County High School this Saturday and state tournament action next week. By Gaye Shaw EDMONTON, KY - On Saturday May 5th the girls and boys tennis teams participated in the first round of the regional tennis tournament. Callie Jessie was named the number 2 seed and Laura Brown the 7 seed in girls singles. In girls double Miranda Devore and Sydney Edwards also received the number 2 seed and Lindsey Compton and Molly Matney earned the 8th seed. Callie, Sydney, and Miranda all received byes through the first round. Callie then defeated Warren East (6-1,6-1) and Greenwood (6-4, 6-2) to advance to the semi-finals guaranteeing her spot in the state tournament. She then played Bowling Green (6-1, 6-4) which placed her in the finals where she played Cassie Pennington (a state contender for singles) of Greenwood and was defeated 0-6, 1-6. Sydney and Miranda defeated Monroe 6-0, 6-1 and South Warren 7-5, (8-6) in a Tiebreaker for the second set which also advanced them to the semi-finals and a place in the state tournament. Next they played Logan County and beat them 7-5, 6-2. They advanced to the finals where they were defeated by Bowling Green 1-6, 3-6 for the regional doubles runner-up title. Laura Brown, Lindsey Compton, and Lauren Coffey each pulled their own weight to help Metcalfe win the regional team title. Laura began by defeating Warren Central 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 and then Logan County before being defeated by the top seed Cassie Pennington. Lindsey and Lauren bet the Greenwood team 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 then Caverna 6-1, 6-2 before being beat by the top seeded Bowling Green 1-6, 2-6. Lauren and Lindsey were put together at the last minute because Molly Matney becoming very sick right before regional play. In boys' action In boys action Hayden Crain and Jackson Bell defeated a talented Glasgow team. We played them three times this season and were defeated the first to times in a tie-breaker. Hayden and Jackson pulled through when we needed it the most. They defeated Glasgow 5-7, 6-4, 6-1.
