According to Kentucky State police, the other vehicle crossed the center line and struck the Flatt vehicle, and say that preliminary indications are that the other driver was texting at the time of the collision. If so, it would be the second fatal accident in Adair County in which texting while operating a vehicle was a primary factor.

KY Wild Rivers adds nearly 1,000 acres of Protected Land

998 acres in nearby and E. of Adair. Wayne and McCreary Counties

By Allison Fleck
News from Kentucky Division of Water

Energy and Environment Secretary Len Peters today announced the purchase of 998 contiguous acres in Wayne and McCreary counties to help protect the exceptional quality and aesthetic character of the Cumberland River's Little South Fork, a portion of which is designated a Kentucky Wild River.

"The acquisition of this land will help protect an exquisite natural environment while providing a beautiful recreation area for Kentuckians and visitors to our state," said Sec. Peters.

The $1.77 million purchase of the land, known as the Burnett property, was made possible through an award from the Heritage Land Conservation Fund, which is funded from the sale of nature license plates and the collection of unmined mineral taxes and environmental fines.

Gradyville Ridge Road ca 1910 picture near Metcalfe line?

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
The photo seems to be taken on a creek bed with the exposed rock bluff as the background. One automatically thinks about Big Creek but something reminds me of the intersection of the William Judd Road, Hwy 80 and the small branch that runs into Leatherwood Creek just across the Metcalfe County Line. Of course, there are any number of similar locations on Big Creek, Russell Creek, Leatherwood and East Fork of Little Barren which are in and around the Gradyville, Weed, and Nell communities. - Billy Joe Fudge

Smart Little Lady finds new home in Green County, KY

Thanks to intercession by Ed McQuaide, another Happy Ending Story

By Ed Waggener

When a dog showed up in a steady rain at Ed McQuaide's home on December 5, 2011, he took her in, analyzed her personallty and deduced her background. Then he wrote, "She appears to be about 10-12 weeks old, mostly lab & solid black. She's a smart little dog and would make a good family pet for a family with kids. She's very smooth and agile in her movements and shows no sign of being abused. She has no problem eating dry puppy food."

He took a photo (See picture of Smart Little Lady) , then publicized her availability and waited patiently. It paid off. Yesterday he wrote, ""Thanks for CM getting the word out; the young lady has found a new home in Green Co., KY."

Our thanks to the folks at the adopting home, and especially to Ed McQuaide making it happen and for sharing another happy ending story. -Ed Waggener

Most area schools are closed for snow

Most area schools, including the Adair County School District, are closed today. Larry Smith just called to enlighten us on the extent:
Green County, Taylor County, Campbellsville Independent, Cumberland County, Metcalfe County, and Casey are closed because of the snow, and so is Russell, but over there, because of sagacious leadership, keen foresight and prognostication, Smith said. According the Smith, the leadership consulted an almanac, saw that January 13, 2012 would be a bad weather day, and wisely scheduled an In-Service training day for Friday the 13th, January, 2012.
Larry Smith may be heard in the mornings on The WAVE, FM 92.7. A Larry Smith can also be heard in the afternoons on The Big Dawg, FM 99.9. It's conceivable that they are one and the same. - CM

Charming birthday coincidence news on a beautiful snowy morning

Carolyn Gaskins has just revealed a possible reason for what CM believes could be the reason for the smile on one day old Madelyn Grace Hinkle's face: Madelyn shares her birthday with Carolyn. Could be Madelyn Grace is just having things her way right now. Could be she's up to something. Whatever the reason, she's obviously one of a kind. One would have to predict great things for her. - EW
