Unified effort expands Old Fashioned Christmas

A TRADITION CONTINUES: Cleanup of the Historic Adair County Courthouse has come a long way in the past week. There's still much to be done, but Adair Heritage Association President Ellen Zornes is confident that the building will be ready for "Hanging of the Green" next week in time for the warm Christmas event 8am-3pmCT on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Click on headline for full story, list of petition signers, and photo(s)
Charles Grimsley is now taking orders for booths for 8am-3pmCT event at the Adair County Courthouse on December 3, 2011, continuing a tradition of Christmas in Columbia as a Downtown event. Fifteen of the sixteen booths open to vendors are still open. Call Charles Grimsley at 270-384-5658 to rent a space.

By Ellen Zornes

Due to so much interest in the courthouse, we'll have it open and decorated in period style for an Old Fashioned Christmas by 8:00amCT Saturday, December 3. We'll begin wrapping gifts and selling courthouse wares at that time also. And, if you are interested in having a booth space at the Courthouse on Saturday, contact Charles Grimsley at Grimsley Jeweler, 270-384-5658.

B.J. Hagy wonders about bronze plaque in the courthouse

BJ Hagy writes:
I was wondering what has happened, if anything, to the World War II bronze plaques that had Adair County's veterans names on them. Are they still in the old courthouse or have they been removed to a different location.

I remember going in to look at all the names when I was a kid growing up and when I came into town for a haircut. I always walked in to look at my dads name, Geo. Frank Hagy, among the many names which were on there.

Thank you,

- BJ Hagy

Adair Co Courthouse: Being in use is important thing

Richard Raines writes:
I personally would not be upset either way about the flat-roofed wings on the courthouse, whether they are left or whether they are removed. I just hope that the building is put to good use by tenants/users who will take care of the building.

I hated to see it set there empty with utilities cut off.

It seems a vacant building goes down so much quicker than one that is being used. Also, I worry about vandalism if it is empty.

I know the flat on the wings are a problem for leaks, but they might provide extra space a potential tenant would like to have. I also think the building would be pretty returned to original "footprint" but I just wonder how hard it would be to remove wings and replace windows and fix the walls to where they didn't bear "scars" of where the wings were if they were removed. -RICHARD RAINES
Thanks. Happy to hear you agree with the decision by Ellen Zornes and the Adair Heritage Association, backed by Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton and with the unanimous backing of Fiscal Court, to turn the utilities back on and put the building to use. Hope you are there December 3, 2011, when the AHA will show it off. Incidentally, one very important thing everyone can do to give immediate support to Preservation/Economic Development efforts to simply maintain membership in the Adair Heritage Association. -EW

The Adair County Courthouse: A tribute to our historic past

By Doug Beard

As a Columbia-Adair County native, I am proud of the historic structure that dominates our town square. It's rewarding to see local citizens take such an interest in this important preservation.

While ideas are being proposed for future development of this building, I would offer this suggestion.

Let's consider devoting space that represents significant historical accounts of our county. This would include, but certainly not be limited to, the following:
  1. The birthplace and childhood home of Jane Lampton, the mother of one of America's greatest writers, Mark Twain.
  2. Adair County during the Civil War.
  3. The true account of the Bank of Columbia robbery.
  4. The home of two Medal of Honor recipients.
  5. The contributions of Colonel William Casey and Daniel Trabue.
There are great accounts of all of these events and they could be represented with displays containing written documents, photographs, models and other memorabilia.

Let's make our Courthouse a place where people can discover more about the history of our great area.

Sincerely,
-DOUG BEARD

Larry Smith photo raises questions about doors, side structure

Comments re photo 42781 Favorite Old Photo Early Adair County CourthouseMartha Berry writes:
It appears that there are no doors on the front and back of the Courthouse, just a walkthrough. And what is the little one story structure on the right front?

Thanks for putting me on a higher plain than Alan and even Mike! That's quite an honor.

Have a great and full-filling Thanksgiving. Thanks. -MARTHA BERRY
Thanks. We're puzzled, too. Maybe Mike Watson, or JIM will weigh in. A lot of people have the same questions, but no one should have any question about the high honor of your status, even above the stars. -EW

Maury Lewis send questions/suggestions inspired by old photo

Maury E Lewis writes:
I like this picture.

What is the year? There seems to be no doors on the court house and the middle is a walk through.

There also seems to be a wing add on on the right side of the building or am I seeing another building that is sitting behind the courthouse?I like the grass and tree area.

That could be a new idea. Take some of the other buildings that are not being used or kept up downtown and put small mini parks in with fountains, benches or perhaps a childrens garden like they have in Somerset.

It would be nice to have all the buildings full but even if they are not being used they need to be kept clean by the owners.

We need more curb appeal by the owners of the buildings.

Some more ideas from beautiful Joppa. -MAURY E. LEWIS

The shopping season is now here. Time talk with our dollars. We're rerunning, with small edits on dates, Tiffany and Eddie Kessler's Grand Idea, first published about 100 days ago. By patronizing U.S. businesses and craftsmen we can not only inject money into our own economy, but provide jobs for fellow Americans!'

By Tiffany Kessler

Everyone knows the U.S. economy is struggling - it's time we as Americans pull together and take advantage of our own resources.

My family and I have made the commitment to have a "Made in USA" Christmas 2011.
