Fall...With Some Surprises

2025-11-10 - Cane Valley, KY - Photo by Robert Ellis, robertelliswoodworking.com.
Robert writes, "There are, in my opinion, opportunities where cell phone photography gets the upper hand over the expensive 'real' camera systems. Simply meaning ~ convenience! Today was one of them. While I was out in the woodworking shop, working on orders, this snow squall came through Cane Valley, and peering out the shop window, I noticed some beautiful contrasting colors happening. Realizing it would likely be a short lived event, I grabbed the cell phone and headed out the door rather quickly, and within a few seconds noticed my neighbors driveway had a very scenic, and potential photo.

The last 3 weekends I've traveled over 100 miles, each trip, trying to get some great Fall photos; and yet this one that took about 5 minutes, and off the cuff, pleases me the most."

What Emerson -- and a Mule at a Gate -- Can Teach Us About the Government Shutdown

By David Goguen

Two old farmers were leaning on a fence one afternoon, watching a mule stare at a closed gate.

One of them said, "That mule's too stubborn to push it open."

The other spat, shook his head, and said, "Nah, he's not stubborn--he's just thinkin' about the meaning of the gate."

They both laughed, and then went quiet for a bit, just watching that mule stand there in the sun. Funny thing is, both of them might have been right. One saw a problem that needed fixing. The other saw something to think about.

That story says a lot about how people see the world.

Adair County FFA Land Judging Team is heading to Nationals!

On Thursday, November 6, 2025, the Adair County FFA competed in the State FFA Land Judging & Homesite Evaluation contest in Hardinsburg. Team members were Ethan Wooten, Addie Baker, Isabella Harvey, and Katie Kean. All team members performed exceptionally. The team earned 6th place in Land Judging and 2nd place in Homesite Evaluation. Isabella Harvey placed 3rd in the state in Homesite Evaluation as an individual.

The state contest is much more difficult than the previous regional contest. In addition to evaluating land for its use in crop production, students at the state level have to assess a site for aspects of home construction. They have to determine how the soil qualities could affect a future basement, home foundation, septic system, and lawn. The information gained through this contest makes these students much more knowledgeable as future home and land owners.

Due to their performance at the state level, the team has earned the right to represent the state of Kentucky at the national contest, which will be held in Oklahoma in the spring of 2026. This is the first time that Adair County has advanced to this level since 2023. The success of this team would not be possible without the many supporters of Adair County FFA. The students would like to thank the many farmers and agriculturalists that allowed them to practice on their land or provided soil cores to study.

LWU Students discover many paths lead to a successful career

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University students received a lifetime of invaluable career advice during the week of November 3-7, 2025.

It came during the university's inaugural "Career Week," sponsored by the LWU Office of Career Services and Alumni Office and held in the Norma and Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship.

The week brought together a diverse range of more than four dozen campus guests who shared lessons learned from their professional triumphs, struggles, failures, secrets and reflections.

The speakers were from a myriad of professions that included allied health, business, communication, education, entrepreneurship, finance, healthcare, media, ministry, public service, sport and social science.

Although the speakers' professions, majors and experiences varied, a few themes emerged, including the benefits of having a mentor, the value of grit and asking for help.

Dentist Dr. Andrea Owens '09 recalled that when she reached dental school, it was the first time she needed assistance from a tutor.

"Working hard only made me better and stronger," she said on her panel, which focused on allied health and healthcare professions.
