Kentucky Color: Longtime Residence By Billy Joe Fudge The evidence is overwhelming that this hollowed out Scarlet oak (photo with article) has been a residence, probably for decades. That evidence is rodent droppings piled outside the door. This den is the winter home of the noisy little Eastern chipmunk, or at least that is what the evidence shows. They spend much of the winter sleeping for extended periods of time. They are not true hibernators, since they wake up every now and again. When they wake up they eat the nuts, acorns and seeds that they have stored in their den. They don't stray far from their den, thus the droppings pile up outside the entrance. Their distant cousins, Grey and Fox squirrels, are out and about all winter feeding on the same food sources as the chipmunks, some of which they may have hidden during late summer or fall. Therefore their droppings are scattered around all over the place. I grew up here in the Great Wooded South calling chipmunks "ground squirrels". According to most sources, there are no ground squirrels in Kentucky. They are larger than chipmunks, live mostly out in fields and hibernate in burrows all winter. The manmade items in the photo are: the most famous walking stick in the Great Wooded South, my Biltmore stick that is used to measure tree diameters and of course, the notebook for recording estimated footages of the standing timber. 2025-11-02 21:32:40 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Kentucky Color by Billy Joe Fudge
Tommy Druen: Collective gullibility Previous Column: What is Love? By Tommy Druen It was a Wednesday night in the fall of 1989. I was twelve years old, sitting in a half-empty sanctuary at our small country church. Midweek services were never well attended--maybe ten or twelve people in total. That particular night our pastor had brought a whiteboard, treating it more like a class than a sermon. I'll admit, my attention wandered. I probably thumbed through the hymnal or stared at the ceiling, anything to pass the time. The lesson wasn't aimed at a middle schooler anyway. But I remember the moment our pastor drew a strange symbol on the board and asked if anyone knew what it was. I leaned toward my mom and whispered, "Isn't that Pisces?" It wasn't. It was the ichthys--a fish symbol used by early Christians. But in a sanctuary that small, a whisper might as well have been shouted. The pastor heard me and asked me to repeat it aloud. I hesitated, not because I was shy, but because I wasn't sure. Football: Indians fall to Eagles By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer The Adair County Indians fell to the Campbellsville Eagles 52-6 on Friday October 31, 2025. The Indians were unable to stop the Eagles rushing attack, giving up 306 yards of rushing plus 148 yards through the air. The Indians offense also sputtered, especially through the air, putting up just 78 passing yards. Junior Quarterback Madden Moye was 7 for 13 for 78 and two interceptions. The rushing attack looked better with 131 yards, led by senior Ryder Rodgers, who had 23 rushes for 83 yards and the Indians' only touchdown. Two other Indians posted positive rushing yards. Junior Brody Karnes had five carries for 42 yards, and sophomore Callum Darnell had seven carries for 12 yards. Darnell also led the team in receiving, with five catches for 68 yards. Ryder Rodgers led the Tribe in tackles, with 11, followed by Callum Darnell with six and Brody Karnes with five. All in all, this was a very tough game for the Indians against a very good Eagles team. The Indians will now lock in and prepare to go on the road to face #1 seed Murray (10-0) in the first round of the Class 3A 2025 UK HealthCare Sports Medicine State Football Finals. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pmCT on Friday, November 7, 2025, in Murray. 2025-11-02 21:24:01 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports
