November is Diabetes Awareness Month

Unless you've been living off the grid, you've probably heard about drugs like Ozempic, Mounjaro, and Wegovy, and perhaps even considered asking your doctor about them. They're all part of a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists, or just GLP-1s.

According to Indiana University Health, the drugs were originally approved to help lower blood sugar, but proved exceptionally effective to help patients lose weight without the potentially risky side effects associated with drugs like phentermine. Drugmakers raced to develop newer versions that would be marketed expressly for weight loss and the first such drug, Wegovy, received approval in 2021. Since then, more GLP-1s have been approved and researchers have found that the drugs may also be useful for the prevention and treatment of heart disease -- something diabetes patients are twice as likely to develop compared to people without diabetes.

And the race to develop newer and better GLP-1 drugs hasn't slowed down.

Ghost tales from old Adair County

Do You Believe...Ghostly Actions?

By Mike Watson

The Melson Ridge area of Adair County was once called Barger Ridge, so named for the family that settled very early in that vicinity, but is long extinct here. Melson Ridge, as it came to be known, became home to the descendants of later settlers from Russell County, who bought farms in the mid-1850s, and their descendants are still living here today. William and James J. Melson, brothers, were the patriarchs of this family.

James J., commonly called "J.J." was twice married and had children from both unions. A slave owner, he fought with the Union Army during the Civil War Between. Though he held slaves, he believed in the sanctity of the nation as a whole.

James J. served in Company G, 12th Kentucky Infantry and often stopped off at his home for rest and food with fellow soldiers while his regiment was on the move. The family cook was an older black woman named Mariah. Family lore says she read tea leaves, which was always an adventure of sorts for the young people, who swore she was always correct in her readings.

Carol Perkins: Farewell to the Beach

Previous Column: Ready to go home

By Carol Perkins

The last night of our trip meant a farewell meal, so I surfed the internet looking for local places. One popped up that I knew Guy would love. Most had closed in Kentucky, but only ten miles away was the restaurant that would put a smile on his face.

Knowing Connie, I didn't disclose the location, but said, "Connie, we're going to surprise you for dinner (supper)," as we drove toward the city of Jacksonville.

"But I'm not dressed for a nice place," she said, eyeing her sweatshirt and loose pants.

I replied, "Oh, don't worry. You'll fit in just fine." That was a clue.

Football: Indians head to CHS for Halloween matchup

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians football team is back in action at 7pmCT on Friday, October 31, 2025, as they go on the road for some spooky football at Campbellsville High School's Dave Fryrear Field, 230 West Main, Campbellsville, KY. Tickets are $9-$10, and can be purchased at hometownticketing.com.

This will be the regular season finale before the Indians head to the playoffs. The Tribe are winners of back-to-back games, but will face a very tough Eagles team that has won eight straight games after they narrowly lost their season opener. Most recently, Campbellsville defeated Kentucky Country Day 27-17 at home last week. Senior Kace Eastridge will be the name to watch for the Indians' defense, as he leads the Eagles in passing yards, passing touchdowns, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns.
