Letter: Little Big Woman

I went through a similar circumstance of feeling inferior because I was 'too skinny' , wore glasses and did not have straight teeth, etc.

At one time there was a lot of emphasis on women's bodies. I read movie magazines where many movie star women were 'measured' and the perfect body was 36 -26 -36. Many movie stars were judged by their bodies, not talent.

I'm glad it has changed, but there are still a lot of beauty products and surgery that some women pay big bucks for. At one time girls could not take certain classes in school and women athletic opportunities hardly existed. I'm glad my granddaughters do not have to endure some of those practices. (name on file)

William Harbert Bates, III, Green County, KY

William Harbert Bates, III of Greensburg, Kentucky, son of the late William Harbart Bates, Jr and Grace Martin Bates, was born on August 26, 1941 in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He departed this life on Friday, June 13, 2025 at his home with his wife by his side.

Most who loved and knew him affectionately called him "Buddy," because he loved to laugh and make others laugh.

His entrepreneurial spirit can be traced back to a story from his childhood. At the age of 10, his neighbor contracted with him to solve a woodpecker problem. The birds were destroying his wooden gutters. At the price of a quarter a piece, he started to help his neighbor with his problem.

Basketball: Indians travel to Scott Co. for Bluegrass Shootout

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team will bring their summer ball action to a close this weekend, as they travel to the KABC Bluegrass Shootout held in the greater Lexington area. All of the Indians games this weekend will be in Scott County.

Saturday, June 21, 2024:
  • 4pmCT: Indians vs Westland High School, at Scott Co. High School
  • 6pmCT: Indians vs Seneca High School, at Scott Co. High School
Sunday June 22, 2025:
  • NoonCT: Indians vs Pulaski Co. at Scott Co. Middle School
  • 2pmCT: Indians vs Whitley Co. at Great Crossing High School
The Indians hope to perform well against the Redhawks of Seneca as they by far had the worst record, in terms of wins, of the three Kentucky teams that the Tribe will face this weekend. Seneca is a team coming off a 9-22 season, but returning 75% of their scoring from last year. Nonetheless, the biggest goal of this weekend, like all of summer ball, is to grow and get better. If the Indians can do that this weekend, then the KABC Bluegrass Shootout will have been a success for the Tribe.

Dumped dogs killing chickens: It's Got to Stop!

By Peg Schaeffer, Sugarfoot Farm Rescue
The Adair Progress

When are people going to stop dumping their dogs? I heard Donna Rieder on Swap Shop Monday morning. She talked about at least a dozen dogs that had been abandoned at the Sam Coffey Hole, which is where Big Clifty Creek feeds into Russell Creek.

She walked outside to find three beagle-looking dogs in her yard near her chicken coops. She called Jimmy Harmon, the dogcatcher, and he came out. They were unable to catch any of the dogs. Once he left, they came back by the barn. Donna approached them, two ran off, but one followed her into the barn, where she was able to get a leash on it and get in into a cat carrier.

It bit her on the right forearm in the process.
