Travel: Vintage Dad's Day at Shaker Village, 3 of 3

2025-06-20 - Harrodsburg, KY - Photo by Robert Ellis, robertelliswoodworking.com.
A photo from Robert's recent visit to Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. Robert writes, "Meet Orville, the turkey. His name was told to me by some children that were familiar with him. I figured in a matter of time, by just following him around, some kind of scene would play out...here (I'll assume) a grandfather lifts his grandson up to peer over the fence to get a better view of Orville."

Basketball: Lady Indians 9-0 in summer play

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

The Adair County Lady Indians Basketball team is now sitting at 9-0 in varsity games on their 2025 summer ball season. Recently the team defeated Rye Cove 41-16, Casey County 63-47, and Metcalfe County 45-38.

The win against the Metcalfe County Lady Hornets comes against a team that finished as runner-ups in the 4th Region Tournament last season. Metcalfe only graduated one senior, so that was quite a nice win for the Lady Indians. The leading scorer in that game for Adair County was rising senior Kinzlee Akin with 19, followed by rising sophomore Reese Bardin with 10. Addie Bowman, another rising sophomore, added 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in that game.

In the prior games, the Lady Indians were led in scoring by Reese Bardin against Rye Cove, with 12, and by Kinzlee Akin against Casey County, with 30. In the game against Casey County, Addie Bowman came up just short of a double/double, posting 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Adair County Lady Indians JV team is also having a good summer, winning both games they've played, 51-24 against Somerset Christain and 62-10 versus Spencer County. The Lady Indians will undoubtedly keep improving and get better as they gear up for what should be an excellent 2025-2026 season.

June 20, 2025 - the longest day of the year

Welcome the summer solstice. Usually when someone complains that it has been a long day, it was a day that felt long. But on June 20, it's more than a figure of speech. It really is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight. It is the day of the summer solstice.

In Chicago, for example, there are more than 15 hours of daylight. In Alaska, the sun drops down to the horizon for about two hours before it chases away the twilight to start the day again.

Legend says it's the day when the sun stands still. That's actually what the word solstice means. It comes from the Latin words sol meaning sun and sistere, meaning to cause to stand still.
